In a perfect world, everyone in our community would be morally upright and socially responsible. Unfortunately, that is not reality.
A lot of us are in environments where we cannot control our community, such as work, school, perhaps even our third place.
So what do we do when some of the people in our community do not offer a sense of safety? Here’s what I think…
Define your inner circle. Set expectations for the way you expect to be treated and how you expect respect to be articulated. Set those expectations and do not allow anyone within your inner circle to convince you that those expectations are not appropriate for you as an individual.
As far as your community, in order to keep your peace, I encourage practicing loving people from a distance. Some of us feel a social responsibility to teach people how to be better. That very responsibility will drain you of your peace, time and energy every single time. Simply accepting that some people are not socially moral because of a lack of education is one of the most freeing realizations one can have as an adult.
You can see them, say “ Hi”and “bye”. But under no circumstances, do you have to invite them to brunch 😌💕
Thank you for such an awesome question ! Listen to this week’s listener letter when EP 27 of Feelings You Can Trust drops, this Monday! See you soon!
