Most people assume that you need to have two functional breasts to breastfeed a baby. For a variety of reasons, some people nurse their babies on one side only. People may wonder whether the baby will get enough milk. When you consider that mothers of twins (and more) can successfully breastfeed, it is clear that each breast will produce the amount of milk needed, given the right stimulation.

The most common reason mothers breastfeed from one side only is past surgery for cancer or to remove a benign lump. If the ductal tissue of the breast has been removed or severely damaged, the breast may not produce milk or the milk may not be able to reach the ni**le. Other nursing parents nurse on one side because of physical issues that make feeding on one side difficult, uncomfortable or impossible. Sometimes a baby absolutely refuses to feed from one breast for some reason. It could be because the flow is slower or too fast on that side. A baby may have a physical issue that makes feeding on that side uncomfortable. (In this case, changing your position may help.) Your local LLLC Leader can also help you think of strategies to try.

Breastfeeding on one side only involves similar techniques to using both breasts. To produce an adequate milk supply, put your baby to the breast early and often and ensure that the baby has a good latch. The breast that is not stimulated will, over time, stop producing milk.

If you are surprised that breastfeeding is possible with only one functional breast you may be even more surprised to know that mothers have breastfed twins or tandem nursed a newborn and a toddler with only one breast. With knowledge, support and determination breastfeeding mothers can do amazing things! If you have a breastfeeding question and need support please contact your nearest La Leche League Leader.

"It is too risky to continue breastfeeding your older child during pregnancy and beyond in tandem with your new baby."

There is some concern among moms and even practitioners that continuing to nurse during pregnancy is risky and can lead to complications such as decreased nutrition to the unborn fetus or even preterm labor and delivery.

This is not only rare, but highly unlikely especially in well nourished women.

This unfounded concern is based on the thought that stimulation to the ni**le, which causes the release of Oxytocin the same hormone responsible for uterine contractions, could also stimulate the uterus to contract prior to full gestation. This is not the case.

In early pregnancy the uterus starts out being fairly insensitive to oxytocin. This does not change throughout the pregnancy until about 37 weeks , when there is a marked increase in sensitivity and responsiveness.

Unless you are severely malnourished you will be able to maintain your body's needs while also providing for the needs of both your older nursling and younger one, while still in the womb and also after the birth.

While continuing to nurse during pregnancy can present with some challenges such as ni**le soreness, possible decreased supply or maternal fatigueโ€ฆthere is no medical reason for a healthy mom to discontinue breastfeeding before she and her child are ready.

Both children will continue to receive the many benefits of breastfeeding for as long as they continue. โ€œTandemโ€ nursing (nursing more than one child at a time) is actually quite the norm in most cultures and has been for thousands of years! โคโคโค

How long should my child be in a booster seat? Where is the safest place in the vehicle for their car seat? Check out these recommendations from our pediatrician Dr. Shoshana Gordon on keeping your kid safe in the car during each stage of childhood.

PLEASE NOTE: These ages are approximations, as children grow at different rates and the car seat they use is dependent upon their height and weight. Read our blog: https://bit.ly/44NZuJG
