Breast Health Awareness: What Every Woman Should Know
As women, our bodies go through many changes over time, and sometimes even small changes can feel concerning, especially when it comes to breast health.
What is the most important thing you can do? Know your normal.
When you’re familiar with how your breasts usually look and feel, it becomes much easier to recognize when something isn’t quite right, and that early awareness truly makes a difference.
🌺Common Changes to Pay Attention To
Here are some important signs we encourage all women to be aware of:
• A new lump in the breast or underarm
• Thickening or swelling in one area
• Skin dimpling or changes (like an orange peel texture)
• Redness, irritation, or flaky skin around the ni**le
• Ni**le turning inward (new inversion)
• Ni**le discharge (especially if clear or bloody)
• Changes in breast size or shape
• Persistent breast or ni**le pain
• Swelling near the armpit or collarbone
• Peeling or crusting of the skin
👉 One commonly overlooked sign:
Ni**le discharge when you are NOT breastfeeding. Many women dismiss this, but it should always be evaluated.
💡 What’s Normal vs. What’s Not?
Some changes can be completely normal, especially those related to hormones.
But here’s a simple way to think about it:
✔️ Normal changes tend to come and go
⚠️ Concerning changes are usually new, persistent, or different from your baseline
🗓️ Self-Checks Matter
We always encourage monthly self-awareness:
• Check in the mirror (arms down and raised)
• Use gentle circular motions to feel the entire breast
• Don’t forget the underarm area
• Pick the same time each month (after your cycle is best)
This isn’t about perfection—it’s about familiarity and confidence.
When Should You Get Checked?
If something feels off and doesn’t go away—don’t wait.
Reach out to your provider or schedule an imaging appointment. Most findings turn out to be benign, but peace of mind is everything—and early detection saves lives.
