It looks like we have royalty in our midst! Meet Emma Vrieze, Miss Minnesota 2025.

Emma is more than a crown. She's a nursing student here at Moorhead, minoring in psychology and leading with heart as president of the Letters of Love club, which sends uplifting messages to hospitalized children around the world.

Whether she's advocating for water safety through her community service initiative or supporting patients at Essentia Health, Emma brings compassion and purpose to everything she does.

Emma credits Minnesota State Moorhead for helping prepare her to rise to each challenge Miss Minnesota brings:

"The unique thing about the nursing program is how incredibly strong it is. Our professors teach us how to be great nurses and critical thinkers," she explains.

"That same critical thinking helps me answer high-pressure questions during competitions. Whether I'm caring for a patient or answering a question on gun control, I must respond with compassion and clarity."

Did you know? Decades ago, Moorhead's nursing program created a trailblazing RN to BSN pathway to help nurses earn their bachelor's degrees while continuing to work in their communities.

In the early days, students traveled from towns like Thief River Falls and St. Cloud to spend full days in class — from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — because online learning didn't exist yet.

Now, the RN to BSN program is available online and in a hybrid format. You can study at a pace that fits your lifestyle.

Dr. Brandi Sillerud and Dr. Heather Winkler recently led a study abroad program from May 21 to May 30, 2025, focused on nursing and healthcare leadership in Germany and Scotland. As part of this immersive experience, students visited ISAR Klinikum Hospital and Clinic in Munich, Germany, and engaged with faculty and healthcare professionals at the University of Dundee and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. These site visits provided valuable insights into international healthcare systems and leadership practices, enriching students’ global perspectives.

In addition to academic engagements, students participated in cultural excursions and guided tours, further enhancing their understanding of the social and cultural contexts of healthcare delivery abroad.

The School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SNHL) is proud to offer these transformative study abroad opportunities annually, with destinations varying each academic year. We invite you to join us for our next global experience in Costa Rica in 2026 (more details to come)!

A duo of Minnesota State Moorhead graduates is stepping up to be healthcare leaders, specifically in the rapidly growing senior care sector. Avery Steffen and Alexys Van Dusen are starting prestigious internships this summer they found through their education at Moorhead. These opportunities are pipelines to become administrators in nursing homes.

"Moorhead's commitment to the healthcare management program helps students gain leadership skills and earn real-world experiences," Alexys says.
