September 28 is International Safe Abortion Day, also recognized as the Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. Its origins lie in Latin America and the Caribbean, where women’s groups have been mobilizing for over two decades to demand that their governments:

• Decriminalize abortion
• Provide safe and affordable abortion services
• End stigma and discrimination toward people who choose abortion

The campaign’s original name, Campaña 28 de Septiembre por la Despenalización del Ab**to, continues to grow in force thanks to the dedication of women’s rights activists in the region. The date was chosen to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Brazil, known as the “day of the free womb,” linking the fight for reproductive freedom to broader struggles for justice and equality.

Here in the U.S., independent abortion clinics provide the majority of abortion care, yet they remain underfunded and under constant attack. While governments often fail to value healthcare and protect access, these clinics continue to show up daily, offering expert, compassionate care because our communities deserve nothing less.

Today Mife turns 25! We first began offering mifepristone to our patients in 2007 after a patient specifically requested this option. It is now used by 50% of our patients to safely end their pregnancy. We celebrate Mife and the important contribution it has made to reproductive healthcare!

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, about half of the states have imposed abortion bans, with 12 banning abortion entirely. These bans are causing established doctors to leave and future doctors to increasingly steer clear of those states. There’s a brewing doctor shortage—often worse in states that ban abortion—and if lawmakers continue to double down on banning health care instead of investing in it, millions of people across the country will feel the pain for years to come. A little ironic to be posting this on social media.............

“We were not trying to sell drugs. We were just informing our followers about a service, a legal service that we offer. So that’s alarming that, you know, that was flagged as not fitting into their standards,” said clinic director Tammi Kromenaker. “To have a private company like Meta just go with the political winds and say, we don’t agree with this, so we’re going to flag these and we’re going to shut these down, is very alarming.”

Clinics, advocacy groups and individuals who share abortion-related content online say they are seeing informational posts being taken down even if the posts don’t clearly violate the platforms’ policies.
