Sir Wiggles has officially joined our family with a very special mission: to become a certified therapy dog for homebound senior citizens in Carteret County. His gentle nature and loving spirit make him a perfect companion for older adults, especially those living with dementia.

Once certified, Sir Wiggles will visit seniors in their homes, offering comfort, companionship, and emotional support. His presence is more than just a friendly tail wag — it’s a reminder that they are seen, valued, and not alone.

If you’d like to meet Sir Wiggles, we’re located at 5113 HWY 70 in Morehead City. He’d love to say hello — and maybe share a cuddle or two!

Thank you to for rescuing him.

A Silent Connection: How Puzzles Help Engage Those with Dementia

Connecting with someone who has dementia can be profoundly challenging. As memory and cognitive abilities decline, communication often becomes fragmented, and the familiar ways of connecting may no longer be effective.

Conversations may become repetitive, and recalling past experiences or emotions might be difficult. For both caregivers and loved ones, this can create a sense of emotional distance, making it harder to feel truly "seen" or heard by the person they care for.

In such circumstances, puzzles can serve as a meaningful bridge. Engaging in simple, tactile activities like assembling a puzzle together allows for non-verbal communication, creating a shared experience that transcends words.

The focus on pattern recognition, visual cues, and tactile interaction provides a way to engage someone with dementia without needing to rely on memory or speech.

Puzzles can bring moments of clarity, stimulate cognitive function, and foster feelings of accomplishment, all of which help strengthen emotional connections, even when traditional conversation is no longer possible.

These are some of the puzzles we use to help our caregivers connect with clients.

A must read for people who are caring for a loved one with dementia.

"Given how inextricably connected our brains are with others, the more compassion and understanding we have for our own needs and limitations, the more energy we have to appreciate the needs and limitations of those who depend on us. Self-care is the only way a caregiver’s mind can persevere."

Jennifer Standish is the proud owner of Seniors Choosing to Live at Home (SCTLAH) in Morehead City, North Carolina. Her journey to this fulfilling role began in an unexpected way and driven by a deep-seated passion for improving lives.Jennifer first encountered SCTLAH while working briefly at their advertising agency, where she was the account executive assigned to their account. Her role involved managing the launch of SCTLAH’s new website, a project that introduced her to the organization’s innovative approach and genuine dedication to senior care. As she collaborated closely with them, she was not only impressed by their professionalism but also inspired by their heartfelt mission to support seniors. This experience made SCTLAH stand out as her favorite client and ignited a profound admiration for their work. When SCTLAH announced that they were offering franchise opportunities, it felt like a serendipitous moment. Jennifer saw it as a chance to align her career with her personal values and long-held passion for helping others. She made the bold decision to leave her position at the agency, driven by a desire to contribute directly to a cause she deeply believed in. Opening the Morehead City office was a leap of faith, but it felt entirely right, and she has never regretted that decision.Throughout her career, Jennifer’s mission has been to enhance the quality of life for individuals through various means. Before her time at the advertising agency, she was a transformational coach, helping individuals reach their full potential. This work was incredibly rewarding, but her focus has now shifted to a new and equally important demographic: seniors. At SCTLAH, Jennifer is committed to ensuring that seniors in the community enjoy their golden years with dignity, independence, and joy. Her mission is to create an environment where they can thrive in the safety and comfort of their own homes. This involves not only providing exceptional care and support but also empowering them to live as independently as possible. Her goal is to enhance their quality of life by addressing their unique needs and preferences, offering them a sense of security and well-being.Every day, Jennifer is driven by the knowledge that the work done at SCTLAH makes a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors and their families. It is an honor for her to be part of their journey and to contribute to their happiness and health. The path that led her here was not what she initially envisioned, but it has become a deeply rewarding chapter in her career, one that aligns perfectly with her passion and purpose.
