LDH will extend its Medicaid managed care contract with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) for 90 days. The contract will continue through March 31, 2026.

Members currently enrolled with UHC will remain with that plan during this period and will not be reassigned to a new health plan on January 1, 2026. No action is required by members at this time.

Update on termination of United Healthcare Medicaid plan:
According to the Louisiana Department of Health,
LDH is going to use an algorithm to help pick a plan for each person who needs to switch from UnitedHealthcare,
according to Louisiana Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein. It will prioritize keeping families together with the
same health care company and making sure the doctors and other medical professionals a person sees most
frequently take their new insurance. “This will take place over the next two weeks, so it will take place over
Christmas,” Greenstein said. “I feel confident that we will be able to execute on this.”

If a Medicaid recipient is unhappy with their new health care coverage, they will have 90 days starting January 1,
2026 to switch into another plan, Greenstein said.

Dear patients — important update on Medicaid coverage

You may have heard recent media reports that UnitedHealthCare of Louisiana (UHC Medicaid) is losing its contract with the state as of December 31, 2025. That means if your child has this health plan, it will change on January 1. It was reported that those with UHC will be reassigned to another plan but we are unsure of those details.

We understand this news is upsetting and confusing. Please know: we were not notified in advance either, and we share your concern about what this means for your care.

We have already reached out to our UHC Medicaid provider representative to get clarity on how this will impact our patients, and what alternative coverage is available.

As soon as we learn more, we will update this page so everyone knows what to expect.
