A Family Tradition
Robert Blereau, MD
Dr. Robert Blereau is a family practice physician who has practiced in Morgan City since 1966. He was born in New Orleans and graduated from Jesuit High School. He received his BS in Chemistry from Loyola University and obtained his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine. He then joined the US Public Health Service for 5 years, serving an internship in Baltimore, 2 years General Practice residency in Detroit, and 2 years at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. After practicing surgery and general practice as part of a group practice, he began his solo practice in 1982. Until 2012, his passion for delivering babies helped bring 4 generations into the area. He once said, “Every birth is a miracle!” He has been a member of the Louisiana Commission on Perinatal Care and Prevention of Infant Mortality since 1994, when he was appointed by Gov. Edwin Edwards. He has been an influenza surveillance sentinel physician for the CDC since 1982. He also has been a regular contributor and on the Board of Committee of the Consultant and Consultant for Pediatricians, widely distributed medical journals for family physicians, medical internists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pediatricians which include articles, photos, and x-rays of his patients’ diseases/conditions. He and Dr. Mario Lopez opened the first coronary care unit at Lakewood Hospital (now Teche Regional Medical Center) in the late 1960s, followed by introducing exercise treadmill stress testing and Holter monitoring, both of which are interpreted. He is a member of the American Medical Association, member of the Southern Medical Association, fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, member of the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, member of the St. Mary Parish Medical Society, and member of the Louisiana State Medical Society. He was a charter Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. He is currently a Diplomate in Family Medicine by the National Board of physicians and surgeons. He was named to America’s Best Physicians 2018. Because of his commitment to the importance of immunizations, he won the highest honor at the 2014 Shots for Tots Conference, the Diaper Pin Award. In 2015, he was awarded the CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award for Louisiana. Dr. Blereau’s desire to serve this community and his willingness to educate those who ask (and even those who don’t) is unlike any other!
