Serious problems folks. The internet is out. I cannot do any work because my entire system is based on the internet and computer systems. It looks like I may be closed today unless they get that fixed quickly. If you have any questions call me on my cell phone or text me or something to that effect.

When Profit Outweighs Protection: Veterans, Coal Miners, and the Cost of Responsibility

Where do we draw the line between financial survival and human responsibility? In my work as a physician, I’ve seen how government agencies and industries sometimes place profit ahead of the very people who sacrificed for them—veterans who served our nation and coal miners whose lungs bear the cost of their labor.

Would you give your baby o***m for colic?
In the 1800s, parents did — thanks to Dalby’s Carminative.

This “soothing syrup” for teething infants contained laudanum (o***m tincture), alcohol, peppermint oil, and sugar. Each bottle held the equivalent of half a tablespoon of o***m mixed with booze.

No wonder the babies stopped crying.

History like this reminds us why modern drug safety laws exist.

Imagine having an asthma attack…and being told to light up a cigarette.

That’s exactly what Dr. Schiffmann’s Asthmador Ci******es promised in the early 1900s. Each pack contained stramonium and belladonna—both nightshade-family drugs—and the instructions literally told patients to inhale the smoke deep into their lungs to stop bronchial spasms.

No to***co, just toxic alkaloids, burning paper, and desperation.

It’s a perfect snapshot of how far medicine has come—and how far we’ll go when gasping for air. Ridiculous, dangerous, and yet somehow widely sold in pharmacies for decades.

This unopened pack (with all 24 ci******es still inside) now lives in Dr. Bebout’s Cabinet of Medical Curiosities—because you can’t make this stuff up.

New Memoir Entry: Why Medicine Draws Me In

Why does medicine interest me? That’s a question I’ve asked myself more than once. The answer isn’t neat. It’s curiosity that won’t quit, a fascination with the morbid side of medicine, and a love of history that keeps me asking why.

In my latest memoir post, I talk about the specialties that never clicked, the ones that keep me energized, and the path I sometimes wish I’d taken. From family practice to forensic pathology, it’s all part of the same story.
