Sossoman Funeral Home, began 71 years ago as a small enterprise to provide helpful services for families in grief, remains today a family operation still committed to a high standard of professional, compassionate care. Established February 28, 1949, Sossoman's was originally located on College Street in downtown Morganton, near the old Grace Hospital (now CoMMA). In 1966, Sossoman's moved from th

e large two-story home on College Street (where the Morganton Department of Public Safety is now located) to its present location on South Sterling Street, near the entrance to Broughton Hospital. Over the years the funeral home facility has been remodeled and upgraded, including a complete exterior facelift in 1986. Sossoman's has long drawn attention for its collection of paintings and small antiques in its lobby areas. Outside, Sossoman's commands a sweeping view of Blue Ridge foothills and is noted for the elegantly manicured grounds, reflecting the firm's attention to the families they serve. Today, the firm is locally owned and operated by Rick Hood and Jimmy Kirksey. The staff at Sossoman's Funeral Home values the loyalty that area families have, in turn, shown to the firm, and is continually striving to find additional ways to better meet the needs and wishes of the families they serve.

Thank you for putting your trust in us for 75 years!

In the early months of 1949, a young man named J.C. Sossoman came to Morganton and set up a temporary residence at the Caldwell Hotel, located where the Marquee Cinema now stands.

J.C, 29, was testing the waters to see if Morganton might be capable of supporting another funeral home — competition for Kirksey Funeral Home which had been founded in the early years of the 1900s.

A native of southern Cabarrus County, J.C. was a decorated World War II combat veteran who had been working at Wells Funeral Home in Canton in the hopes that he could one day buy the business.

When that opportunity fell through, a minister suggested to J.C. that he turn his sights to Burke County. It was, according to his son, Calvin, J.C.’s ambition to own and manage his own funeral home.

“My dad was a better salesman than P.T. Barnum,” Calvin recalled. “And he basically sold himself to this community. He must have done a good job because 75 years later Sossoman Funeral Home is still going strong.”
