Be cautious of common so-called “health foods”. There are so many foods available today that are recognized as healthy and consumed often in the diet that are wreaking havoc on our health.
I hear from clients often that they have granola on their yogurt; granola is one of my least favorite ”health foods”.
As an experiment, I consumed my homemade yogurt that I make with our cow milk, which has no added sugar with granola for two days . I had a spike in my blood sugar from the granola as you can see in the first two pictures. Today I had the yogurt by itself and barely had spike (last pic).
And this was with plain, no added sugar yogurt. Imagine starting your day with sugary yogurt topped with granola most mornings, it is dessert, and will leave you feeling lousy later in the day.
A healthy way to consume your yogurt is to look for yogurts that have less than 5 g of sugar or just plain yogurt. Top with fresh fruit, seeds, and nuts for a crunch opposed to granola.
It’s not realistic that we’re never going to spike our blood sugars above 140 after we eat, but the goal is to minimize these spikes. Imagine if yogurt is your go-to breakfast every morning.
Staying within a 70 to 140 range for blood sugars is a foundation for optimal health. When your blood sugar goes below 70, it starts to affect mood, cravings, and anxiety. Going above 140 on a regular basis can lead to insulin resistance, slowed metabolism, fat storage, inflammation, liver disease, and heart disease.
Food is meant to be enjoyed, and I believe in tweaking your meals to support your health and enjoy at the same time.
