After Army Warrant Officer Brian Burns sustained severe brain and internal injuries in a motorcycle collision, his wife Kayla — seven months pregnant with their third child — confronted the possibility she might raise “three little Brians alone.” Brian spent three weeks fighting for life at a trauma hospital, then transitioned to Select Specialty Hospital - Springfield for extended recovery.

There, and later at Select Medical Rehabilitation — now CoxHealth Rehabilitation Hospital — Brian progressed from speaking a single word to eating, standing, walking, and managing daily tasks. Weeks later, he reached a milestone his family had held onto: being present in the delivery room for their son’s birth.

After a devastating car crash, Florida grandmother Lucy Jimenez was given just a 15% chance of survival. She spent weeks sedated and critically ill before beginning her fight back at Select Specialty Hospital - Tallahassee, where she slowly relearned to breathe, speak and sit upright. Eight weeks later, she no longer needed a ventilator or feeding tube. Lucy then moved to Select Medical Rehabilitation - Tallahassee, rebuilding strength step by step. Nearly three months after the crash, she walked out on her own. “I’m a fighter,” she said—and she proved it.

Today we celebrate Pharmacist Day and recognize the vital role our pharmacy team plays in patient care.

From pre-admission to post-discharge, our pharmacists and pharmacy technicians work behind the scenes and at the bedside to ensure patient safety. Before a patient arrives, they review and reconcile medications, checking that everything is in order. During a hospital stay, they independently manage multiple medications and make adjustments as needed. At discharge, patients receive counseling and follow-up support to help them stay on track.

Our pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are more than medication experts — they are partners in recovery.

A devastating car accident on the way to the grocery story landed Frank Gostrue on a ventilator with acute respiratory failure and immobile due to multiple spine and rib fractures. After 32 days in the hospital, Frank’s condition stabilized but he couldn’t breathe on his own, eat, talk or walk. Knowing he would need specialized care, his family chose to transition him to Select Specialty Hospital - Southeast Ohio, a critical illness recovery hospital.

Matthew and Amber Davis were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their third child when fluid build-up in Matthew’s lungs cause respiratory and renal failure. Matt ended up critically ill and on a ventilator, requiring continuous dialysis. Twelve days later, as Matt slowly improved, he turned to Select Specialty Hospital – Morgantown to continue regaining strength and mobility so that he could be home before their baby daughter arrived.

For Michele Lawson, fighting her way back to independence from two life-threatening illnesses has taught her this: “You don’t realize how much you miss the simple things until you aren’t doing them.” Michele arrived at Select Specialty Hospital – Morgantown following surgery to repair a rupture in her re**um. She was too weak to walk or take care of herself. A physician-led team put together a plan to help Michele get back home with her husband and dog.

Meagan Milburn began feeling ill while opening gifts on Christmas Day. The 30-year-old West Virginia woman had no idea how ill she was with pneumonia and respiratory failure. Then, she developed sepsis. She spent seven weeks fighting for her life at an acute care hospital before arriving at Select Specialty Hospital – Morgantown with hopes of regaining the active, independent lifestyle she enjoyed before her illness. A physician-led, interdisciplinary team collaborated to get Meagan strong enough to get back home.

March is Brain Injury Awareness month. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury every nine seconds. A brain injury can affect how a person thinks, acts and feels.

Brain injuries can result from an outside force to the head, known as a traumatic brain injury (TBI), or an internal cause – known as a non-traumatic brain injury (NTBI).

February marks American Heart Month, a time to raise more awareness for heart health and cardiovascular diseases.

Select Medical admits a range of cardiac rehabilitation patients recovering from a variety of conditions, including heart failure, cardiomyopathy (heart issues making it hard to pump blood) and cardiac surgery, including heart transplants. Our interdisciplinary teams – including physicians, nurses and therapists – develop individualized treatment plans focused on post-surgical healing, dietary and medication education and restoring strength and endurance. The goal is to avoid cardiac complications and provide patients with the skills, strategies and techniques needed for independent and heart-healthy lives.
