From rehab to the national stage!

With the support of WVU Medicine’s Outpatient Rehabilitation team, 17-year-old Indigo Bruehwiler learned to run for the first time, qualified for Nationals in adaptive track, and is leading the charge to bring wheelchair basketball to West Virginia schools.

This summer, her leadership was honored with the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award.

“Bringing medical oncology and infusion services to the WVU Cancer Institute at Fairmont Medical Center means our patients can receive the care they need in the comfort of their own community,” said Ashkan Emadi, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Medical Oncology at the WVU Cancer Institute. “Cancer treatment is challenging enough without the added burden of long travel. Our goal is to deliver the same advanced therapies, personalized attention, and compassionate support you would find at our main campus—right here, close to home."

The WVU Cancer Institute has expanded cancer treatment services at WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center. 💛 Patients will have access to a new medical oncology clinic on the hospital’s third floor, with chemotherapy and infusion services coming later this fall.

"This expansion at Fairmont Medical Center strengthens our promise to serve patients where they live and work,” Hannah Hazard Jenkins, MD, director and executive chair of the WVU Cancer Institute, said. “Cancer care is not just about treatment - it’s about community, connection, and compassion."

However, that doesn’t mean the overdose epidemic is over. We talk about overdose awareness, prevention, and treatment, with Dr. Michael Reynolds, addiction medicine specialist at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute Healthy Minds – Chestnut Ridge Center.
