CommunityBeat CommunityBeat is a fictional newsroom - that feels like it was started in the break room of a mid-sized insurance office.

At CommunityBeat things are covered, things are missed. These are the stories of the everyday heroes that “keep the beat” thumping.

COMMUNITYBEAT — EPISODE 4: THE SIREN

Early morning. The town is quiet, wrapped in a light fog.

Printz sits calmly on the sidewalk, watching down the street. In the distance, a siren begins to sound.

Before anything else can happen, Mace bursts outside the CommunityBeat News building, phone already in hand.

“We are LIVE—sirens just activated—this could be a developing situation—”

Inside, the newsroom doesn’t move.

Gus takes a sip of his coffee.
“First Tuesday.”

ECHO projects a clean blue display across the room:
MONTHLY SIREN TEST — 9:00 AM

“Scheduled system test. No threat detected.”

Olivia doesn’t react. She doesn’t need to.

A small upward glance. A breath.

“It’s a test.”

The room settles back into stillness.

Mace… does not.

Still filming. Still leaning forward. Still committed.

“…we’re continuing to monitor…”

Outside, nothing has changed.

Mace burst into the newsroom at 9:42 a.m.
Phone already streaming.
Red light glowing.
Ring light clipped to his shirt like a misplaced body cam.

He whisper-shouted at full volume.

“MaceTime News, live from the newsroom! Folks, we’ve got suspicious activity. Stay locked in—this is developing fast.”

Olivia was at her desk.

Quiet.
Focused.
Doing… something.

Mace immediately positioned himself directly behind her chair, leaning over her shoulder, camera zoomed tight on her hands.

“Look at this, chat. No eye contact. Hands moving too fast. She’s clearly covering something up. Classic evasion.”

Olivia didn’t look up.

“Mace.”

Her voice had the calm precision of someone removing a safety latch.

“Back.
Up.”

Mace pivoted back to the lens.

“She says that—but watch closely. She’s about to crack. The truth is seconds away.”

He swung the camera back to her screen.

“Whatever’s on here, it’s big. I can feel it.”

Olivia slowly turned her chair.

Looked directly into the camera.

“You are currently live-streaming me doing payroll.”

Mace beamed.

“Exactly! MaceTime News doesn’t hide from the people!”

Olivia stood up. Calm. Deliberate.

“If you don’t end this stream in the next five seconds,” she said pleasantly,
“I will explain to your viewers why your last expense report is flagged for fraud.”

Mace lowered the phone like it had just bitten him.

The stream ended.

Ten minutes later, a new sign appeared on the door:

NO MACETIME NEWS INDOORS
NO ZOOMING ON PEOPLE
MACE: GO FILM SQUIRRELS OR SOMETHING

Mace added a tiny 🔴 LIVE sticker next to his name anyway.

Mace has begun practicing Microndo.

It’s like Taekwondo.
But with a microphone.
And no opponent.

He says it improves:
• readiness
• posture
• breaking-news reflexes

Gus says,
“Please stop bowing at the copier.”

COMMUNITYBEAT — COMFORT FOOD ANALYSIS DESK

We examined a heated matchup this week.

Not politically.
Emotionally.

Grilled cheese versus hot ham and cheese.
Winner receives tomato soup.

Arguments were presented.

Grilled cheese claimed purity.
Simplicity.
A long-standing relationship with the soup, built on trust and melted agreement.

Hot ham and cheese countered with ambition.
Protein.
A belief that it could “handle the soup” if given the opportunity.

Mace argued the ham brought “leadership.”
No one asked him to elaborate.

In the end, tomato soup chose tradition.
Grilled cheese earned the dip.
Hot ham and cheese was advised to pursue mustard-based futures.

No feelings were hurt.
Lunch was respected.

This concludes our review.

Turns out the sign was loose.
The newsroom reacted anyway.

A very serious investigation followed.

Most mornings, nothing breaks.

The coffee gets made.
The lights come on before anyone remembers turning them on.
Someone panics early. Someone else reminds them it’s fine.

We don’t chase headlines here.
We notice patterns.
We write down the parts people usually skip.

If you’ve ever lived in a place that feels familiar without being loud —
you’ll recognize this.
