Cupping is a treatment that is used for tight, spasmed, tired, sore and/or over worked muscles. Cupping works using negative pressure or suction to gently adheres cup shaped tools to tight muscle areas on the body. The suction relaxes muscles, increases blood circulation and lymph flow. The suction also produces a variety of shades of reddish-purple marks. These marks come from the blood and toxins located in the over-worked muscle coming to the skin surface from the space created by the suction so that the body can more easily clear and heal the sore area.

Cupping Facts:

Cups can be made of glass, plastic, bamboo, silicone, or ceramic.

Negative Pressure can be created using a suction, suction pump or fire.

The coloration of cupping marks is unique to the type of injury to the muscle.

Cupping mark healing depends on the severity of the injury and the patient’s own healing rate which varies based on overall health, lifestyle and constitution. Cupping marks can last a few days to a few weeks.

In rare cases, clear or yellowish colored blisters may result. These blisters are often excess amounts of toxins and fluid build up in the skin that the body wants to expel. These blisters should not be popped (the body should be allowed to clear the toxin naturally) and should be kept clean and dry and care should be taken that they do not become infected.

There are 2 kinds of cupping: Stationary or Walking/Moving/Sliding:

Cups left in one area (anywhere from 5-15 minutes based on the time it takes for marks to appear) are considered stationary cups.

Cups can be used with lotion and moved over tight muscles. This is called Walking/Sliding or Moving cups.

Cupping decreases pain, spasm and tightness and often results in increased range of motion.

Cupping is a great treatment option for Olympians, Athletes, Weekend Warriors and People who hold sustained positions for a long time (long commutes, long hours sitting or standing) or anyone with tight sore muscles.

Cupping can be part of your beauty routine. There are cupping techniques for facial rejuvenation, skin toning and cellulite. These cupping techniques do not leave cupping marks.

Cupping is typically considered as originating as a part of Chinese Medicine and is often performed by Acupuncturist. Cupping has been performed for thousands of years in many different cultures and can be considered a folk medicine. Cupping is now most used by acupuncturist, chiropractors, massage therapist and physical therapist.
