Taking life-saving care on the road 🚐💛

The WVU Cancer Institute’s mobile lung cancer screening unit, LUCAS, is bringing hope directly to communities across West Virginia — especially in rural areas — traveling more than 14,000 miles last year alone along our Country Roads to deliver life-saving, low-dose CT screenings.

Here’s the impact:
• Up to 27 patients screened per day
• Nearly 5,000 screenings since 2021
• 1,778 screenings in 2024 alone
• 55+ lung cancers and 10 additional cancers identified

And the need is great. More West Virginians die from lung cancer than colorectal, prostate, and breast cancers combined. While nearly 240,000 people in our state are eligible for screening, only about 5% are currently being screened.

LUCAS is changing that — one stop at a time.

But it takes resources to keep this care moving:
• About $5,000 per day to operate
• $50,000+ annually in maintenance
• 140 screening days already scheduled for 2026

This 48-foot, state-of-the-art mobile unit ensures patients can receive screenings close to home — and connects those who need follow-up care with providers in their own communities. For uninsured patients, screenings may be covered thanks to generous donor support.

Because early detection saves lives — and access should never be a barrier. This Day of Giving, help us keep LUCAS on the road and reaching the people who need it most.

A big win for West Virginia’s nonprofit sector!

Today the Senate nearly unanimously passed the Neighborhood Investment Program, with a vote of 34–1.

For nearly 30 years, this program has helped nonprofits generate charitable investment across the state - supporting 4,486 community projects and nearly $137 million in private donations that help feed, house, educate, and support low-income West Virginians.

With the support of the House and Senate, the bill now heads to Governor Morrisey’s desk for final consideration.

We’re grateful to the advocates, legislators, and nonprofit leaders who helped make this possible and continue strengthening communities across West Virginia.
