West Virginia University's combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics program, the third oldest in the nation, was initiated in 1981 by 2 ambitious WVU students who wanted to pursue a career in both pediatrics and internal medicine. The program has evolved over time and adapted to the changes occurring in medicine. The first class graduated in 1985, and we have graduated individuals every year since. Our program provides excellent training in the fields of internal medicine and pediatrics and allows for the growth and development of clinicians who will care for patients of all ages. Many career opportunities exist, from community practice to academics; primary care or any of the more than 20 fellowship opportunities. Our program accepts up to 4 residents each year. The middle 2 years are divided such that the resident can experience the personality of the disease spectrum, which is prominent in pediatrics. Rotations in the first year are in 3 month blocks, in years 2 and 3 are in 4 month blocks, and in year 4 return to 3 month blocks. Residents perform rotations primarily at J. Ruby Memorial Hospital and WVU Children's Hospital in Morgantown, but other potential locations include Chestnut Ridge Center for behavioral and mental health services, the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV, and outlying rural sites throughout West Virginia.
