We are proud to share this powerful reflection from the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), capturing a single, extraordinary day from their Summer 2025 medical mission.

Among the dedicated physicians was our very own Dr. Youmna Mousattat, lead pediatric hospitalist at WVU Medicine's Thomas Hospitals, who brought her expertise and compassion to the young patients in Aleppo.

Dr. Mousattat's commitment to global health and medical education embodies the very heart of our mission: delivering hope and healing to those who need it most. We are honored to have her as part of our team and grateful for her service beyond borders.

Throughout Dr. E. Gordon Gee's tenure as WVU president, he remained committed to his vision of increasing healthcare access across our region while attracting some of the best and brightest health innovators to West Virginia.

I am truly blown away and honored by this incredible portrait by WVU's own Professor Naijun Zhang, which will live at WVU Medicine. If only I looked that good in person!

As temperatures soar across our region, we're urging everyone — especially older adults, young children, and those with chronic health conditions — to take extra precautions.

Extreme heat isn't something to underestimate. Be wise, stay safe, and check in on those who may need support.

Extreme heat puts everyone at risk, especially kids, older adults, and those with health conditions. Dr. Edwin Leap spoke with WVVA News today about heat safety.

Dehydration, confusion, muscle cramps, and dizziness are early signs of heat-related illness. Left untreated, it can lead to heat stroke, kidney failure, or worse.

💧 Stay safe:

Drink water often

Avoid peak heat

Take breaks in the shade or AC

Check on vulnerable loved ones

Never leave kids or pets in cars

You can’t cheat the heat, be smart, stay cool, and take care of each other.

This level of dedication and compassionate care has a meaningful impact on the patients and families we serve. It reflects the core values of WVU Medicine and the standard we aim to uphold each day. Thank you for your continued commitment.

When a patient received a life-changing diagnosis that required surgery, a major barrier stood in the way: transportation. Living in temporary housing and relying on public transit, the patient was unable to reach Thomas Memorial Hospital for an early morning surgery and ultimately declined the procedure.

Refusing to let that be the end of the story, Dr. Todd Witsberger, surgical breast oncologist, and his surgery scheduler, Teresa Snodgrass, took matters into their own hands. On the morning of the scheduled surgery, they personally traveled to the patient and escorted the patient to the hospital. The surgery was successfully completed.

“We’ve worked together for over 30 years and have helped patients in similar situations many times,” Teresa shared. “Not everyone has someone nearby who can help them—and that’s just what we do.”

WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Witsberger and Teresa for their extraordinary dedication. 👏 Your commitment to compassionate care makes a true difference in the lives of our patients. 💙 💛
