Energy Express

Energy Express is a free, six-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children 1st-6th grade living in West Virginia. The answer: Energy Express

This program aims to improve and/or maintain reading levels through creative uses of books, art, drama and vocabulary. During the summer many children lose academic skills. Without school breakfast and lunch, many children lose nutritional well-being. Many children have few structured learning opportunities. Summer learning and nutritional losses are greater for children living in rural and low-in

come communities. Children living in rural and low-income communities often fall behind during the summer months, starting each school year behind where they were the previous spring. Successive summers of limited learning opportunities may cause children to fall below grade level by the end of elementary school—putting them further and further behind more privileged peers.

In 2025, Energy Express served 39,968 meals to youth across the state! These help fuel their growing minds and bodies and create meaningful summer experiences.

A day at Energy Express is full of fun, learning, and meaningful moments! ☀️📚

From breakfast and group reading to creative writing, STEM activities, and noncompetitive recreation, every part of the day is designed to keep kids engaged and excited to learn.

And the best part? Each child takes home a new book to read with their family—building confidence and a love for reading that continues beyond the program. 💚

Conversations are a key component to developing strong readers!

Energy Express children are a chatty bunch: From meals and welcoming activities, to drama, STEM challenges, and discussions about stories, our Energy Express certified teachers and trained mentors invite children to have meaningful conversations.

“Words are your toolbox for understanding and communicating about the world,” said W. Steven Barnett, director of the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University. Research suggests that interactive conversation, not just exposure to words, drives language development.

Our members in Wirt County hosted a toy drive in June 2025 to donate to families in their community. A few local businesses allowed them to place donation boxes at their location. They were able to receive over 70 donations and give back to dozens in the community!
