Dearest friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we write to inform you that Friendship House will be closing our doors on Walnut Street on March 1st. February 28th will be our last day operating as a drop-in center on Walnut Street.

We will be re-opening as a Recovery Community Organization (RCO), Friendship Community in Recovery. We plan to be open at our new location on Don Knotts Blvd on or around April 1st. Our new RCO will be non-clinical, peer-led programming focused on recovery and wellness rather than a drop-in center.

At Friendship Community in Recovery, you can expect:
• Peer Recovery Support and Advocacy
• Multiple Pathway Meetings (NA, AA, SMART Recovery, Etc.)
• Support Groups
• Recovery Nightlife Activities
• And more!

In order to utilize our services at Friendship Community in Recovery, we ask that you identify as someone who lives with substance use disorder and has a desire to participate in recovery-focused programming.

The changes in our program are related to funding sources and circumstances out of our control. Our friends at the LIGHT Project are working to find a way to fill any gaps in services that this move may create. Follow our friends at the LIGHT Project for updates!

Thank you to all our peers who have utilized our services at the drop-in center. Thank you to all staff both past and present. And thank you to all the volunteers, students, and funders who have supported us along the way. You all have made Friendship House something special and we have accomplished so many things together. We have enjoyed spending time with each and every one of you over the years, and we couldn't have done it without you all!

Please join us at Friendship Community in Recovery when we open our doors in April! And please follow our page, Friendship Community in Recovery, for more information about the RCO.

We will leave some resources in the comments. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to message us on here or email Kait at klayman@mphealthright.org

We love and cherish you all! ❤️

Mon County warming shelter opens for winter 2022-’23

Facility will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

MORGANTOWN – As the chill of winter sets in, several organizations and individuals have come together to manage and operate a cold weather shelter. The Monongalia County warming shelter opened for the season Thursday, Dec. 1, at Hazel’s House of Hope in Morgantown.

It will be open until March 31, 2023, for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The goal of the shelter is to provide a gap in vital services by keeping those who are unsheltered safe this winter.

Free bus transportation is available to the facility until 8 p.m. daily. Friendship House in downtown Morgantown is open from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. daily to serve as a cold shelter.

Several area organizations have partnered together to manage and operate the shelter.

United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties developed a plan, secured funding and is overseeing the operation of the shelter. Milan Puskar Health Right is providing daytime shelter space, resources, volunteers, medical equipment and training to staff and volunteers working at the shelter.

Morgantown Community Resources, Inc., is providing the shelter facility at Hazel’s House of Hope. The The Salvation Army- Morgantown is allowing the use of its space between the main lobby and the dining room at Hope Café and are providing cots, meals, and kitchen access to replenish drinks, water, and supplies. Lauren's Wish is providing staff training and support.

Catholic Charities West Virginia will oversee invoicing and payroll. Community Kitchen, Inc. is assisting with meals and backpack foods as needed.

First Presbyterian Church Morgantown and Morgantown RAMP is providing a group of community members to use Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds to place children, families and others who may not be able to stay in a group shelter. There are more than 30 volunteers who have stepped up to recruit qualified staff and work in the shelter.

Funds for staffing were secured by The City of Morgantown, the Monongalia County Commission, Milan Puskar Foundation and Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia, Inc.. Other funds were donated by St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish, James F. Giuliani, Karen Giuliani and James A. Giuliani for support, supplies and emergency expenses. Donations can still be made to the shelter by contacting the United Way of Mon and Preston Counties.

🚨 NEW EVENT ALERT 🚨
Please join LIGHT Project at The Friendship House in Fairmont to connect and share with people who understand the pain of loss related to overdose. Beginning Thursday, November 3rd we will be meeting for an Overdose Survivor Support Group at Friendship House Fairmont at 1:00pm. We will be meeting bi-weekly to share support and love to our friends in need.

We have lost an alarming number of friends and family to overdose and survived our own near death experiences. This group serves as a reminder that we don’t have to walk through life alone. Anyone who has been impacted by overdose is welcome, there is no prerequisite to join us. We hope to see you there. ♥️
