So many celebrations this week. A perfect example of our diversity and our many faiths celebrating significant holidays at the same time.
Such an important time and great opportunity to educate children to appreciate our diversity and celebrate the similarities, even in our differences .

We're sharing another article today about the intersection of Black history and people with disabilities. The disability rights movement gained momentum in the 1960s and 1970s, using the guiding principles of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

As this article by the Legal Defense Fund points out, disability rights activists like Judy Heumann and Ed Roberts were influenced by civil rights movement ideas of collective action, peaceful protest, and civil disobedience to challenge systemic barriers that kept people with disabilities from being included in society.

The disability rights movement was successful in helping to pass several important pieces of legislature to improve the lives of people with disabilities, namely the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Olmstead Act passed in 1999, which affirms the right of people with disabilities to live in community settings vs. institutions.
