Something transformational is happening at STEPS—and now you can see it.
đź”· The Future of STEPS
The David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training & Education for Patient Safety (STEPS) at West Virginia University is expanding (3rd Floor HSC North)—bringing a bold new vision to life that will redefine how healthcare professionals are trained across our region.
This project has officially been approved and is moving forward, marking a major milestone in advancing patient safety and clinical excellence.
What This Expansion Will Deliver
This next-generation environment will include:
• Expanded high-fidelity simulation labs
• Immersive clinical training environments
• Multipurpose classrooms and education space
• Increased capacity for students, residents, and providers
• Enhanced interdisciplinary training
These are not just spaces—they are environments where critical decisions are practiced before they matter most.
Why It Matters

At STEPS, healthcare professionals train in realistic, high-pressure environments—learning how to respond, adapt, and deliver care with precision.
The impact is clear:
âś” Safer patients
âś” Stronger teams
âś” Better outcomes
A Strategic Investment
This expansion represents a $2.75M – $6.05M investment in the future of healthcare.
With planning and design already underway, we are now entering a critical phase—bringing this vision to life through community and donor support.

We’re celebrating David and Dr. Jo Ann Shaw, two incredible supporters of the WVU School of Medicine!

The Shaws have spent more than 40 years helping our students learn, grow and make a difference. Their generosity created the David and Jo Ann Shaw STEPS Center, giving our learners hands-on training with the same equipment they’ll use in real clinical settings.

From scholarships to wellness support, the Shaws continue to shape the future of healthcare in West Virginia. We’re so grateful for their leadership and love for WVU.
