Closing out NIAW 2025 with our Lab Director Mel, AKA: Dr Clemmer!

🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

I’m Melanie Clemmer (aka Dr. Clemmer). I came to the CRM as a new embryologist fresh from my time as a postdoc in 2007 and became the laboratory director in 2014. I fell in love with reproductive medicine as an undergrad who first intended to be a veterinarian and later chose to pursue higher education in the field of reproductive physiology at WVU. I have a MS and PhD in reproductive physiology and studied pregnancy loss in dairy cattle. While at WVU the CRM opened up and the graduate students were encouraged to come see the experience. I had definitely found my calling and waited for an opportunity to come back to the clinic as an employee.

The two years of infertility were some of the most terrible times for me emotionally. We learned that I have endometriosis with mostly blocked tubes. After surgery, medical therapy and several failed IUIs we underwent IVF with Dr. Toffle. I was a terrible responder and after talks of cancelling we pushed ahead. Ended up with only 4 eggs, which made 2 embryos. Both were implanted and now we have our oldest son. It was very different being in the laboratory and seeing your own embryos in the microscope.

After trying over a year for a second child we decided not to do any treatment and be happy as a family of 3. A surprise miscarriage followed by an even bigger surprise successful pregnancy gave us another son.

I love working every day to build families and certainly hold my colleagues behind the laboratory door in high regard. I’m blessed to use science to help people create families. I love taking your first baby pictures and then seeing you embryos turn into little people. Most of all I love teaching others about the field.

Part three of NIAW 2025 features our other NP Holly!

🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

My name is Holly and I am a nurse practitioner at the WVU CRM. Many of you may also know me as an IVF coordinator prior to my current role. I’ve always felt called to this specialty even prior to my own struggle. I love being there to support my patients through the best and even worst days of their lives.

My fertility treatment journey began in 2019 after having tried for 3 years on our own. 4 IUI cycles, a round of IVF, an ectopic pregnancy resulting in surgery, a months long clinic shutdown due to the pandemic and a successful frozen embryo transfer I finally became a mom to my son Odin in January of 2021. I decided after this to further my education so I could help my patients on a different level and started as an NP in January of 2024.

To my surprise, that April, four years after Odin, I found out I was surprise pregnant with my daughter Indie. As many of us know, infertility often robs us of the surprise and excitement that those who don’t struggle with infertility get to experience. This was something I NEVER thought I would experience.

My team/family at the CRM has been there for me every step of the way. Whether it was to taking care of me on my journey to motherhood or watching and helping me grow into my role as a nurse practitioner I am forever thankful that life led me down this bumpy and windy road because without it I wouldn’t have my babies, or the best job anyone could ask for taking care of all of you.

Part two of our NIAW 2025 series is Miss Brittany!
As many of you know Brittany is one of our Nurse Practitioners at the CRM. Read her story below!

🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

“My story with the CRM began in 2019 when I was diagnosed with PCOS and ovulatory dysfunction. We tried several rounds of ovulation induction cycles with my body not giving the expected response. We regrouped with the help of Dr. Rowan and started with a new treatment plan. It worked, but unfortunately did not end in a healthy pregnancy. We repeated the protocol and I went on to have a healthy baby boy in July of 2020. I was fortunate enough to get my dream job here at the CRM after completion of my Master's degree to become a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. When we were ready to expand our family, we once again turned to the CRM, who I was now lucky enough to be employed by. After going through two more early losses, we were able to add another healthy
baby boy to our family in June of 2024. The satisfaction I get from helping others achieve their family building dreams is my favorite part about the job!”

During NIAW 2025 we will be sharing snippets from our staff who have also been affected by infertility!

First up: Misty Gibson, IVF nurse coordinator!

🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

My name is Misty Gibson, I am the new IVF Coordinator here at the CRM. My fertility journey began back in 2019. I came to the Center for Reproductive Medicine in May of 2020. My treatments started with doing IUI. After 6 failed attempts, my husband and I decided switching to IVF would be out best option for us. After a very stressful IVF stim cycle that was almost canceled, we ended up with 5 perfect little embryos. My first embryo took and I was pregnant. This sadly resulted in still birth of my beautiful daughter named Eden. After losing my daughter, I then had 2 more failed embryo transfers.

After feeling defeated, I decided to do another transfer. I was pregnant! This resulted in my sweet baby boy named Zayne. Zayne did come very early though, but he is perfectly healthy and hitting all his milestones. I could never thank the Center for Reproductive Medicine for never giving up on me and helping me achieve my dream of becoming a mother.
