Compensation: 3% Commission (1099 Contract)

Very memorable case a few years ago (I don't do general surgery anymore) but this was probably one of the best cases before retiring from general surgery. Patient came with a life threatening condition, dead bowel, and other issues, mortality from surgical intervention & general anesthesia would be 95%. If we don't do anything, then it's 100%. This was excellent team work with my anesthesia colleagues at United Hospital Center where we performed a life saving operation (with the grace of God) using local anesthesia and sedation avoiding the risk of general anesthesia in this gentleman. I would never forget this patient fully awake in the recovery room, emotional, thankful, shaking hands with me and others. It is very rare that such complicated procedures can be done under local anesthesia, a lot more work on the Surgeon and the Anesthesia team but was definitely worth it.
