We are honored to serve the family of George Sarris.

George Sarris, 85, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, at Mon Health Medical Center. He was born on March 15, 1940, son of Nick Sarris and Mary Panos Sarris. He grew up in Liberty, West Virginia and was a 1958 graduate of St. Francis High School.

Upon receiving his degree from WVU in Business Administration with a major in accounting, he worked at Galis Manufacturing in Fairmont, WV. In 1969, he began working for Consolidation Coal Company as Controller of the Blacksville Division in Wana, WV. In 1992, he was named Controller of Consol’s Northern West Virginia Region. He retired from Consol in 1996.

Throughout his life, George was guided by his deep faith, his commitment to community and, most of all, his love of family. He was a devout member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and worked diligently to preserve the presence of his Orthodox faith in Morgantown.

In 1988, George was asked to serve on the Finance Committee of the Mon Health System Board of Trustees. This led to a long and rewarding dedication to preserving the presence of a community-based hospital. Eventually, he was appointed chairman of both the Hospital and the Health System Boards. He took great pride in the accomplishments made by the medical staffs and the employees to the health care of the Morgantown community. He also served as Chairman of the Healthworks Rehab Board, President of the PACE Tech Board and on the Allocations Committee of United Way.

George’s greatest pride, however, was the loves of his life, his wife, Barbara and his daughter Ellen. He was also proud of his son-in-law, Troy. He enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews and his many godchildren as they took their places in the world. His extended family and his friends enriched his universe.

George was the ultimate storyteller and loved talking about growing up in Scott’s Run, working at Max’s Family Store, playing baseball…all the adventures of a young boy who loved life.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley, and brothers-in-law, Paul Pappas, John Christodoulou and Jay McCoy and his sister-in-law,Patricia McCoy. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughter Ellen and his son-in-law, Troy Sedlmeyer. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Marjorie Christodoulou of Charleston, WV; Pam Pappas of Uxbridge, MA; and his brother, Sam (Christine) of Fallston, MD, his brother-in-law, Danny McCoy (Pam) of Greensboro, NC and sister-in-law, DiAnn McCoy of Morgantown; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Tuesday, August 12, from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. A Trisagion will be held at 5:30 pm with Rev. Fr. Jon Emanuelson to conclude the evening visitation. Visitation will continue at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 447 Spruce St, Morgantown, on Wednesday, August 13, from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am with Rev. Fr. Jon Emanuelson officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Peace Garden Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: Assumption Greek Orthodox Church 447 Spruce Street, Morgantown, WV 26505 and/or St. Ursula’s Food Pantry and Outreach Program PO Box 18 Pursglove, WV 26546.
