State of Alaska invites applications for the position of Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor I/II/III
The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), Southern Region, is recruiting for a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor I/II/III for their Ketchikan office. The mission of DVR is to assist adults and transition aged youths with disabilities to obtain and maintain employment. Employment contributes to a person's ability to live independently, and DVR believes that every person has the right to work. Here is a chance to use your counseling skills and knowledge of the local Ketchikan and surrounding communities’ labor market to help improve the lives of persons with disabilities.
This position requires the incumbent to travel to remote areas via small aircraft or boat and have occasional overnight stays.
Duties
Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors are responsible for counseling persons with disabilities and their families to identify and resolve problems. They plan individualized vocational rehabilitation programs and provide support and direction during the rehabilitation process, arrange for medical and psychological evaluations and vocational testing and/or work evaluation, place clients in jobs, and attend meetings, seminars and training sessions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Successful Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors will have the following:
Knowledge of target population, including physical and mental impairments and their effects on vocational and social adjustment
Knowledge of psychological tests and other evaluative techniques
Knowledge of techniques and principles of diagnostic interviewing
Knowledge of counseling and placement of persons with vocational/occupational impediments
Knowledge of Federal, State and community programs providing services to persons with disabilities
Caseload management experience
Strong oral and written communication skills
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to delegate tasks when necessary.
· Commitment to excellent customer service, exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with co-workers, consumers and to accept supervision
· A dedication to lifelong learning in relationship to their own professional development
