Leave it to our AMAZING Cardiac Rehabilitation staff to go above and beyond to make patients feel special. In recognition of American Heart Month, they recently handed out heart healthy treats to patients, so carefully packaged in cute little treat bags. In addition to being American Heart Month all month long, this week is Cardiac Rehabilitation Week! Thank you to our Cardiac Rehabilitation team for all they do to help our friends, neighbors and loved ones who have heart disease recover faster and return to full and productive lives.

Thank you to the incredible staff and volunteers including the GAVC Health Occupations students and instructors who helped us screen 90 students for cardiac abnormalities last week at Dwight High School! The Rhythm of Our Youth program, which provides area students with a free, non-invasive cardiac EKG that screen for undiagnosed heart conditions is made possible thanks to the generous donations made to the Morris Hospital Foundation.

Next stops for Rhythm of Our Youth: Reed-Custer High School on March 25 and Gardner-South Wilmington H.S. on April 8. If you have a student who attends either of these schools, be sure to register them for the screening by completing the Rhythm of Our Youth consent form on the Morris Hospital website.

A special thank you to the 22 employees and six family members who volunteered their time on Saturday with We Care of Grundy County’s school backpack program! In just two hours, our volunteers packed 720 weekend food bags for local students and helped organize shelving to support the program’s ongoing efforts. This is just one of the many ways we live our mission and care for our community beyond traditional healthcare!

Today our staff is showing just how much they care about YOUR HEARTS by participating in Wear Red Day, a nationally designated day that occurs on the first Friday in February to raise awareness that heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans, both men AND women. We love how some of our staff got extra creative by accessorizing their department uniform, not to mention the special touches for patients in Cath Lab and Cardiac Rehab today. So here’s our message to the community on this great day. Please, make sure you know your total cholesterol, your blood pressure, your blood sugar, and your body mass index. Having these four numbers in check and at healthy levels can reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Be sure to talk to your health care provider about these numbers and what they mean, and how you can manage them. There is nothing we’d love more than for you to have a healthy heart.

In recognition of National Wear Red Day today, Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Jibran Rana and our Cath Lab team are presenting their patients with red roses and carnations while educating them on the warning signs of heart attack. Those warning signs include: chest discomfort, discomfort in other areas of the upper body, shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, rapid or irregular heartbeat, feeling unusually tired, feeling lightheaded. It’s just another example of the great care provided by this LIFESAVING team.

Yesterday was National Women Physicians Day, an annual observance honoring the pioneering achievement and ongoing contributions of female physicians in the field of health care. The celebration commemorates the trailblazing spirit of Elizabeth Blackwell, MD, who in 1849 became the first American woman to earn a medical degree, paving the way for countless female doctors to follow. Please join in showing appreciation for the 39 female physicians on the Morris Hospital Medical Staff whose expertise and dedication help advance local health care and enhance the health and well-being of our community, represented here by Dr. Mary Menz, Cardiologist, and Dr. Hetal Amin, Allergist, who celebrated the day from our Ridge Road Campus yesterday.
