This is odd... scientists have developed a method to convert plastic waste into vanillin, the primary component of vanilla flavoring. Researchers at the University of Edinburgh engineered E. coli bacteria to transform terephthalic acid (TA) - a compound derived from polyethylene terephthalate plastics - into vanillin. In their experiments, approximately 79% of the TA was converted into vanillin. ​

Insanely, due to the increasing demand for vanillin, which is widely used in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, this is seen as a good idea.

It appears our world becomes more and more committed to synthetic crap so long as it continues to drive the economy.
