Today we stopped at Homestead Refillery downtown Morris to see our friend Dawn Maffeo at her new store! We learned about sustainability and how we can do our part to consume less to be a better friend to the environment. We left informed and with a special gift from Dawn. Dawn has been a long time supporter of the clients of Illinois Valley and our mission. Thank you Dawn!

Last but certainly not least, meet our friend, Juli!

My name is Julianne. Most people call me Juli, but my nickname is Juju. I live with my mom and dad, and I also have siblings. I do not have any pets of my own, but my sister has dogs that I love. The dogs’ names are Oakley, Jetta, and Millie. I also love my Grandpa Joe.

Growing up, I thought school was fun. I attended the Reach Program at Minooka High School. Josh was my friend growing up, we went to school together.

For fun, I like puzzles, drawing, spending time with Jill, swimming, and learning about horses. Dogs and horses are my favorite animals. I like to ride horses. If I could go anywhere in the world, I would go to Disney again. I went there with my family recently for vacation and had so much fun.

My favorite person at IVI is Jill, and it makes me happy to see her every day. Staff help me with outings and help me with my money when I am out in the community. I participate in Job Club and cooking skills while I am at the day program. I also know some sign language, and I enjoy learning more.

I am in the Special Olympics. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I help decorate my house and even leave out cookies and milk for Santa.

I am an early bird. My favorite foods are salad, hot cocoa, McDonald’s, and mashed potatoes. I do not enjoy sweets. My least favorite food is soup.

I love volunteering! Some of the places I have volunteered are Community Nutrition Network (CNN), Mobile Meals, Morris Library, and We Care.

Juli’s mom said,” Julianne was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and low muscle tone at birth. A shunt was placed at six months old and she had several revisions after. She started at Easter Seals at eight months old. At two and a half years old she fell and hit her head on the kitchen floor, then had a seizure that lasted over two hours. At Children's Memorial Hospital she was on a ventilator for over 10 days. At that time the doctors didn't think her outcome would be good. Even though she can't read or write and her speech is severely limited, she is enjoying her life and doing great.

Juli attended Oak Valley, Mazon, Saratoga, and the Minooka High School Reach Program before coming to Illinois Valley Industries Day Program when she turned 21.

She has a sister Angela, a brother-in-law Steve, a brother Matthew, a sister-in-law Megan, and five nephews. Her nephews’ names are Ethan, Aiden, Evan, Charles, and Franklin. She also has a very large extended family, including her Grandpa Joe, many aunts and uncles, and lots of cousins. She loves spending time with all of them.

Juli is an animal lover. Jetta, Oakley, Millie, Lulu, and Coco are her favorite dogs, and she loves playing with them.

She is very involved in the Special Olympics. She currently does track and field, soccer skills, basketball skills, corn hole, and bowling. She has also competed in bocce, golf skills, and equestrian, and has won lots of medals at regional and state competitions. Juli loves competing and having fun.

She is a great cheerleader at her nephews’ sporting events and can be very loud. She loves going fishing with her dad, spending time on her iPad, coloring, and looking at pictures. She enjoys watching wrestling, animal shows, and Rescue 911.

Juli loves attending the day program at Illinois Valley Industries, where she feels like she belongs and enjoys all the activities offered to her. When she isn’t able to go, she worries that her friends are sad and crying because she isn’t there.

She has a very big heart and cares about everyone. She especially loves giving and receiving hugs. Julianne is a very sweet young lady. She can be very quiet at times, but also very loud at others. She loves to have fun with family and friends and take part in community activities.

She also loves going shopping at Walmart and buying her own things. Our last family trip to Disney was amazing, and she had a blast.

Even though her speech is very limited, she usually knows how to get her point across. She has taught us a lot about patience, never giving up, and unconditional love.”

For the last year, Jill led the donation efforts at Narvick House to collect money for the Grundy County Animal Control for food, toys and blankets. They love to visit the shelter. Giving back to the community that gives so generously to us and others is the highlight of our day!

Next up in our Life Story series, we’re excited to introduce our friend, Christian!

My name is Christian. I live with my mom and my stepdad in Gardner. I have a brother and a sister, and I also have one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law. My brother’s name is Curtis. I have one niece, and one nephew, their names are Brooklyn and Colten. I am a proud uncle. I also have two dogs named Toby Keith and Bella.

One happy memory I have from when I was younger is a surprise party for my stepdad. I remember that was a really good time. I went to school at Saratoga, Minooka, and Morris. I did not enjoy getting up early for school and I didn’t really care for the schooling, but I liked my teachers and my friends. My favorite subject was lunchtime. When I was younger, I played Little League Baseball in Joliet behind the Jackhammers field. I had a lot of friends growing up.

My first job was at Turf Team, and I worked there for five years. Now I have worked at Wash Cove Car Wash for eight years. My favorite part about work is making money and then spending money. One of my goals is to begin working full-time at the car wash. Last weekend, I woke up extra early to cover someone’s shift. I also volunteer weekly at We Care, and I go to the library to volunteer, too. At We Care, I am the box maker, and I am very good at it. One thing I have learned while coming to IVI is how to be a good volunteer and how much I enjoy helping others.

In my free time, I like to sleep, clean my lawnmower, and mow the grass. Baseball is one of my favorite things. Baseball makes me happy, and I like learning about it and watching MLB games on TV. I like all different types of music, and my favorite artist is Jelly Roll. I hope to go see him in concert with my mom someday. I also like watching Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD. I don’t really enjoy movies.

My favorite food is Corleone’s. It is the best. My second favorite food is Bozo’s Hot Dogs. I don’t like sushi. My favorite holiday is my birthday in March. This year I am spending it in Texas to visit family and for vacation.

My family is very important to me. My big brother, my sister, my mom, my stepdad, and my dad are all important people in my life. Most of my friends from when I was younger are not in town anymore because they moved away, but I have made new friends at IVI. My best friend at IVI is Austin. Sometimes my stepdad and I watch television together. I also spend time with my friends at IVI. The staff there are very nice to me. They are kind and help support me.

Christian would like people to know this about him, “I am kind. I care about my family and my friends at IVI. I am dependable and a hard worker. I am proud to be an uncle and proud that I have been at my job for eight years. Baseball is my favorite sport and I really enjoy being at home in my warm bed. My family and my job make me the happiest.”

Christian’s mom said this, “Christian is very friendly to everyone he meets. If he sees someone needing help, he will offer to help them. He can be very funny sometimes too and makes us laugh.
When Christian was younger, he used to have to be woken up before work or school, but now he sets his alarm on his own and gets up by himself. He likes to be early for everything. Christian gets his lunch ready independently the night before and gets himself ready the day of. He has met many milestones throughout the years, and it makes me very proud that he is able to do these things for himself.

I love that Christian is proud of the work he does at Wash Cove Express Car Wash. When he goes to We Care and assembles boxes, he loves to come home and tell me how much his group was able to get done that day. If IVI is working on barricades, Christian will come home and tell me what his role in production was that day. If I give him a task around the house to do while I am at work, he will tell me exactly how he did it when I get home.

I cherish that I still have my son around. He has had many medical issues that many people would never know about. He is a survivor of heart problems, blood disease, multiple eye surgeries, and even cancer. As scary as all of those medical issues were, I am so thankful that I was able to be there with him through it and that he is still here with us. My son is a fighter. If you need a friend, Christian will be that person because he has a very big heart.

I also love Christian’s imagination. He has a lot of Matchbox cars and buildings for them. Some of the buildings he bought and others his brother Bubba built for him. He sets them up all over his bedroom floor and pretends he is a trucker or a mechanic. He acts like he is traveling from state to state in minutes, and he could play with his cars for hours.

Christian also loves to watch sports, go bowling, and go fishing. Most of all, Christian loves his family dearly, and I am very proud to be his mom.”
