Beware of babies! Found this one on my porch when I walked out about 5:00 p.m. Thursday to walk the dog. It did not flinch when I got close, even when the dog sniffed it. Remembering best practices, I did NOT touch it. I could barely detect it was breathing. I hoped Mama would come back for it. While on the walk I saw a lone doe, told her to go get her baby.
It was still there about 25 minutes later when I return from the walk. Hadn't moved a millimeter, didn't flinch, could barely detect breathing. I was afraid it was sick. Despite my worry, I still followed best practices and did not touch or disturb it. I remembered mother deer almost always come back for their babies.
The dog and I went in for dinner. About an hour later, I went back out to check on the baby. GONE!
If you ever come across these Wildlife babies, no matter how sick or frail they appear, please give mama a chance to come back for them.
