In ancient times, wreaths were believed to be charms of the turning seasons. Hung upon doors, they were said to keep restless souls from crossing the threshold uninvited. Some lore tells that if you crafted your wreath with rowan, yew, or willow, no spirit could pass your doorway unless you called it. Others believed a wreath of marigolds and mums guided ancestors to your hearth with their bright autumn hues. In Appalachian lore, wreaths of bittersweet vine warned witches and wandering folk alike that the home was protected by charms.

The circle itself is the oldest symbol of eternity, echoing the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. By the time Halloweenโs roots wound through Celtic Samhain and later Christian All Hallows traditions, the wreath had become both guardian and guide, welcoming beloved spirits while barring ill will.
