Boundaries can help you retain a sense of identity and personal space. They are easier to create and maintain than you might think.
-- Healthy Boundaries --
There could be different expectations you have in your relationships. Like...
The amount of time you spend together
The frequency of communication when you're apart.
What's considered to be cheating in a committed relationship.
Lines being crossed when discussing finances.
These expectations could change throughout the relationship so it could be helpful to discuss what your guidelines are and set clear boundaries that align with both of your needs.
There are a variety of ways to set clear boundaries in relationships.
1. Begin Early
It is easier to introduce at the start of or earlier on in a relationship rather than years down the road. Especially once habits and routines have set in.
2. Conversation is Key
It might feel awkward. Talking about your emotions or bringing up tough subjects can really make a healthier impact in your relationship.
You do need to have these type of conversations, even if they are really difficult to discuss. Not only do these discussions help both partners understand the extent and rules of the boundary, but they provide an opportunity to explain why you value a particular boundary.
3. Use "I" Statements
Sharing how you feel by starting off with "I Feel..." can make a healthy impact in your relationship.
4. It's OK to ask for space
There is a chance your partner might see this request as a form of rejection. So it is important to take their feelings into account and explain this isn't the case.
