DID YOU KNOW.....???

"Late talkers" are toddlers who have typical comprehension but a limited number of spoken words.

Research shows that 70-80% of late talkers will catch up to their peers.

Sounds like pretty good odds, right?

Wrong.

This means 20-30% of late talkers will NOT catch up to their peers. They will have persistent issues with language and literacy that will affect them throughout their lives.

There is no way for us to know if a child will fall into that 70-80%, or that 20-30%. This is the purpose of EARLY INTERVENTION - to catch that 20-30% of children who will NOT catch up on their own.

So... is it even important that preschoolers receive therapy, if most will recover on their own? How do we determine if they will be a part of that 25% who don't recover?

Research has actually shown that speech therapy during early childhood can beat this recovery rate and speed up recovery for students who stutter! So, yes, treatment is important!

There is no way to absolutely know if they will be a part of that 25%, so we should probably treat them as if they are until we know otherwise. Are there different factors that point to long-term stuttering in preschoolers? Yep!

We can absolutely look at those factors to help us know if our little friend is more at risk! A few of those factors include things like: family history of stuttering, onset after age 3.5, stuttering longer than 6 months, being male, and having other speech or language concerns.

👉I have a handout of all of these risk factors plus more in my Preschool Fluency Binder. Click my link in comment to check out more info. 🐝

These books are such a powerful tool for parents -- they are a way to connect, a way to calm down, and a way to teach kids self-control skills.
