July is Sarcoma Awareness Month!

Grey’s Anatomy Sarcoma episode. Season 7; Episode 4

Powerful!

The intensity of being diagnosed with a sarcoma and the fear of losing you’re leg! The impact of saving lives and limbs and restoring function!

Orthopedic oncologist save lives and limbs and restore function as best we can.

Prior to the mid 1970s and early 1980s amputation was routine.
With so many advances in orthopedic oncology and medicine as well as knowledge gained from the adjuvant use of chemotherapy and radiation and studying the behavior of sarcomas I’m ecstatic to say that the overwhelming majority of limbs can be saved nowadays approaching 95%.

It’s only the most extreme cases that require an amputation.

We still have a long way to go to save everyones’ lives afflicted with the disease!
Help support awareness and fundraising efforts for this orphan disease.

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month! The sunflower is widely recognized as the official symbol for sarcoma awareness. Its meaning as a symbol for sarcoma is rooted in several powerful associations:

🌻 Symbolism of the Sunflower for Sarcoma
1. Resilience and Strength
Sunflowers grow tall, strong, and reach toward the sun — symbolizing hope, endurance, and vitality in the face of adversity, which mirrors the strength of those battling sarcoma.
2. Light and Positivity
Sarcoma is a rare and often aggressive cancer. The sunflower represents light, warmth, and positivity, offering a message of optimism to patients, survivors, and families.
3. Sarcoma Awareness Color
The sarcoma awareness color is yellow, the same as the sunflower. Yellow stands for hope and support in cancer awareness movements.
4. Growth and Community
Sunflowers turn toward each other when there’s no sun. This reflects the support system among sarcoma warriors, caregivers, and researchers — turning to one another for strength.

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month! The diagnosis of sarcoma of a child is devastating to parents and families. Early detection is key, and during Sarcoma Awareness Month, I’m sharing information I hope you will share.
Symptoms of sarcoma in children vary depending on the tumor’s location and size. Some common signs include:
A lump or swelling that may or may not be painful.
Bone pain, especially if the tumor is near a bone.
A limp or limited range of motion.
Swelling or redness around the tumor site.
Other symptoms like abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or vision problems, depending on the tumor’s location.
While the exact causes of sarcomas in children are often unknown, genetic mutations play a role in some cases. Some inherited genetic conditions can increase the risk.
Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests (like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans), biopsies, and blood tests. Treatment options usually include a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Children with sarcoma often respond well to treatment, and survival rates are generally higher than in adults. However, survival rates can vary based on factors like the tumor’s stage, size, and location.
Important Considerations:
Sarcomas are rare but serious cancers, and early diagnosis is crucial.
Specialized pediatric oncology teams are best equipped to treat these cancers.
Research is ongoing to develop new and more effective therapies for sarcomas.
Let’s all support the Sarcoma Foundation of America and others who every July raise awareness and resources to help children and families navigate the healing journey.

Sarcoma Awareness Month! Congratulations to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) sarcoma specialist and immunotherapy expert Sandra D’Angelo, MD.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted accelerated approval for the immunotherapy afamitresgene autoleuecel (Tecelra®, also known as afami-cel) for the treatment of adults with a rare soft tissue cancer called synovial sarcoma.

Afami-cel is the first engineered T cell therapy to receive FDA approval for a solid tumor cancer.

“This treatment offers an important new option for people with this rare cancer,” Dr. D’Angelo says. “It is also an important step forward in the development of T cell therapies for solid tumors, which has been a major challenge.”

Other cell therapies, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy, involve targeting surface proteins to recognize and attack a cancer cell. Until now, these types of immunotherapies have been used only to treat blood cancers.

It’s incumbent on all orthopedic oncologists and their teams to follow and support the exciting work being done to address sarcoma at its core.

🩺💔 Mental Health & Alcohol Abuse in Orthopedic Residents

Orthopedic surgery residents face an intense and often silent crisis. Behind the long hours and surgical training lies a growing epidemic of burnout, depression, and alcohol abuse — often only visible when exam scores drop or colleagues withdraw.

📊 Key Stats:
• 52% report emotional exhaustion
• 13% screen positive for depression¹
• 61% meet criteria for hazardous alcohol use²
• 18% report suicidal ideation³
• Substance abuse and depression go vastly underreported due to stigma, fear of licensure action, and cultural silence⁴

📉 Consequences:
• Lower Orthopaedic In-Training Exam (OITE) scores in residents with burnout, depression, or alcohol use⁵
• Alcohol impairs memory, focus & test performance
• Suicide is the second leading cause of death among residents⁶

🚨 A declining OITE score may be more than academic — it may be a cry for help.

✅ Action Steps:
– Normalize mental health screening
– Watch for performance changes
– Use tools like AUDIT to screen for alcohol misuse
– Train faculty to respond with support, not shame

We must protect the well-being of those training to protect others. This starts with honesty, support, and change.

Please join me in sharing and celebrating the work of the Sarcoma Alliance! Over the last quarter century, they have been serving their communities with networking, advocacy, support groups, events, and much more.

When their founder, Suzanne Leider, was diagnosed with sarcoma, it took four years before she met another sarcoma survivor. That’s too long.

Realizing sarcoma patients were underserved, she founded the Sarcoma Alliance in 1999 with the words “guidance, education, and support” in her head. Sarcoma Alliance
