On August 28th, Dr. Don Oh and the Montvale Orthodontics staff brushed up on their emergency response skills in the event of a cardiac emergency. The group chose our BLS Skills option, opting to review the American Heart Association training videos on their own. With the videos and written assessment out of the way, we focused on the physical steps to take when someone may need CPR.
During the session, the group practiced both single-rescuer and multi-rescuer response situations. We covered the immediate emergency response, the delivery of high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths, using the AED, and reacting to potential respiratory arrests. We also made sure everyone understood what changes are needed when the victim is a child, infant, or an adult.
The interactive setting gave the Montvale Orthodontics team an opportunity to ask any questions that popped up while they demonstrated their proficiencies in various scenarios. For example, Jorge wondered what to do when a choking victim slumps over while he or she is receiving the Heimlich maneuver. Do you know?
Getting BLS certified (or re-certified) in the skills setting worked for Montvale Orthodontics. The training is shorter than a full BLS Renewal or Initial course, and focuses on the muscle memory needed in high-stress situations like a sudden cardiac arrest.
