When considering surgery, it's always important to understand the recovery process. Very often, drainage tubes are part of the equation, especially during a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the abdomen. During the procedure, excess skin and fat are removed, and the underlying abdominal muscles are tightened to create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile.

People often opt for a tummy tuck after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or due to aging-related changes that result in loose or sagging skin. The surgery typically involves an incision along the lower abdomen, through which the excess tissue is removed and the muscles are sutured together. Recovery involves a period of rest and gradual return to normal activities.

What happens during a tummy tuck?...

A recent article in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons highlights surgical options for uneven breasts. Uneven breasts, also known as breast asymmetry, is a condition in which a woman's breasts are noticeably different in size, shape or position. It can be fairly common and can affect a significant number of women. In fact, one study found that more than 81 percent of participants had significant differences between their left and right breasts.

Breast asymmetry can be caused by a range of factors from genetics to injuries to developmental changes, including:

Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy and menopause can affect breast development and lead to asymmetry.

Genetics: Breast size and shape are influenced by genetics. If your family members have breast asymmetry, you may be more likely to develop it as well.

Injuries or Surgeries: Trauma to the chest area or previous breast surgeries can result in asymmetry.

Weight Fluctuations: Significant changes in weight can affect the size and shape of the breasts, leading to asymmetry.

It's important to emphasize that having uneven breasts is quite common and is often unnoticeable. However, if significant differences between the breasts are causing emotional distress or physical discomfort, there are several options available for correcting asymmetry and helping patients feel more comfortable in their bodies.

Surgical options include breast implants, fat grafting, breast reduction or a breast lift.

“Self-care is giving yourself permission to pause." -Cecelia Tran

There is a common discussion I have with my patients surrounding around the thought that surgery is self-indulgent. It is something they often refer to as needing to be the "right timing." This can translate to months or turn into years to find the ideal time to focus on self-improvement.

It's so interesting to me to see these women that are giving all of themselves to everyone else feel when it comes to them, it is not a priority. Even though many of them, especially those looking to have a breast reduction, have suffered for years with discomfort, pain, limitations and confidence issues. Why as women do we feel that taking care of ourselves is often last on the list?

When you are making a life-changing decision like surgery, yes you do have to be in the right mindset. However, putting off something that can offer you a more confident, productive and happy lifestyle can be more detrimental than selfless.

Women often struggle with this concept of "self-care." Whether it be as simple as stepping away from a crazy schedule to have downtime, or booking that procedure, we tend to put ourselves last. And it is often riddled with guilt.

I am in the mindset that life is short. And if we spend too much of it racing the clock, we will not honor ourselves with the pure joy that can come from taking care of ourselves. It's not selfish - it's necessary. Self care if important to reset, realign and remember you are here to enjoy your time. So don't wait. Book that appointment, find ways to take care of yourself, choose you first...and don't look back.

Going to a plastic surgeon conjures up many questions and concerns. Sometimes nerves can get the best of you during an appointment and you can forget questions on your list. You may also feel shy or intimidated to ask the things you really want to know. The only embarrassing questions are the ones you don't ask.

When discussing with plastic surgeons what questions they would like their patients to ask them, five common responses were captured in an article in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and include:

How realistic are my expectations? Setting expectations for surgery is vital. Physicians want you to be involved in the process. Talking about your aesthetic goals, what you expect, what you don't want and what is achievable are the best ways for you and your doctor to get on the same page.

How will this procedure age with time? It's important to know what the procedure entails and what the results will continue to look like over time.

What kind of maintenance or monitoring does this procedure require? It's pertinent to know about any necessary follow-up procedures or best practices post-surgery....

“Out of clutter find simplicity." -Albert Einstein

As the summer months start to wind down and schools prepare to open, there is a certain nostalgia that starts to build. There's something about the summer that makes you just slow down and enjoy the moment. I'm sure it's the more relaxed schedules, vacations and excuses to meet with friends - but it's also a time where we appreciate the good life - the simplicities that make every day just a little more enjoyable and fun. The extra daylight stimulates serotonin, our happy hormone.

We tend to give ourselves permission to live away from a schedule and structure and "go with the flow." It reminds us that time with our loved ones is the real priority, not so much the to-do lists. We make time to do the things we really love and waste time without guilt. We move more, we celebrate more and we indulge more. It gives a sense of freedom and can be very energizing.

I also find the summer months make my mind sharper. When I'm not in the same rush mode, I am able to think and reflect. It inspires me to de-clutter and start the new season fresh and renewed.

As we transition to fall, I encourage you to align your mental and physical activities to the next season. Embrace the change in nature and the reminders than come with it. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, in the last few weeks of summer, I plan to "breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit."

A common question when considering breast augmentation is how it will affect breastfeeding and if breast feeding is still an option post surgery. It is absolutely possible to breastfeed after the procedure yet there are a few things to consider prior to having breast augmentation. Meeting with your breast surgeon for a consultation to discuss your options is a critical step in the process.

Breast Augmentation and Breastfeeding
Breast augmentation is a common surgical procedure to increase the size and shape of breasts. This is typically done one of two ways – with breast implants or fat transfer from another part of the body. There are a vast array of breast implants to choose with different materials, fillings and textures. Fat transfer most likely includes liposuction to take fat from another part of your body...

“Your attention has value. Don't give it away. Stay focused." -Maxime Lagacé

It's inevitable that the field of plastic surgery includes patients that are chasing unattainable results. In my world, much of my focus is on women who have had a devastating diagnosis and are simply looking to go back to what they refer to as "normalcy," but I do encounter the other side. The side that is scouring social media on a daily basis and self evaluating how they can achieve the results of influencers and social media mavens to improve their own looks. I am often handed "inspo" pictures, screenshots, and aspirational dreams. The impact of social media on the popularity and demand for plastic surgery procedures continues to amaze me - and other colleagues in our industry. The increase in Zoom calls and selfies has been instrumental in people looking at themselves more closely and finding their faults - desperately seeking to improve their appearance.

I find so much of this has led to unrealistic expectations found in the photoshopping, photo enhancing, filtered and edited photos that are bombarding our society. We are losing sight of natural beauty and the important things in life by focusing so much attention on unattainable results and buyers remorse when the outcome does not meet the expectation.

I pride myself on my strong doctor-patient relationships that includes open communication, honesty and realism. Those conversations are real and authentic. It's what makes me love what I do.

We have trended so much toward wanting what others have and have lost sight on what we want. Even being part of this industry, I have always tried to focus on the gifts I have been given and appreciate my strengths. It's hard not to compare yourself to others, but staying in your lane and maximizing your gifts will ultimately be the path that leads to your most authentic self.

Getting plastic surgery can take a toll on your body and requires a good deal of healing and rehabilitation. Your diet is one of the fastest ways to help speed up your recovery and there are certain foods that help the body heal faster.

Healing Foods Post Surgery
Surgery is often followed by some pain, swelling and bruising. It is important to rest for at least two weeks post surgery and avoid exercise and strenuous activity for up to six weeks. In addition to resting, a good diet can help speed up the process. Following is a quick breakdown of some of the foods to actively consume to help your body heal.

Drink water – Dehydration is a very serious issue after a surgical procedure. Many patients suffer from nausea and don’t drink water which can cause them to need more in-hospital care.

Eat protein – Meat, beans, eggs (or egg whites), and dairy products like yogurt are all high in protein which is critical for your recovery process.

Vitamins to fight infection – Get plenty of vitamins A and C in order to fight infection. Vitamin A is found in eggs, dairy, and cod liver oil. Vitamin C is found in citrus, tomatoes, strawberries, and leafy greens.

Vitamins to reduce bruising – Arnica and bromelain decrease inflammation and reduce bruising around the incision.....

“Nature is the purest portal to inner-peace." -Angie Weiland-Crosby

There is something so grounding about the beach. Just putting your bare feet in the sand seems to ignite a sense of rejuvenation. When you look out into the water, it never ceases to amaze me that this world is a mystical place. We know that being outside is essential for health and well-being. The outdoors is a natural source of Vitamin D, helps to lower blood pressure, relieves stress, strengthens immunity, sharpens your focus, calms the mind, and has even been known to increase longevity.

It's no wonder the spring and summer months have such a profound effect on people's happiness and motivation. Just the simple act of going outside for a walk can do wonders for your psyche. I always recommend to my patients to move outdoors and get some natural sun. Two of the best times to do this is early morning to ground yourself with nature before the day starts, and in the evening - preferably post dinner to wind down before bedtime.

And, if you are lucky enough to be close to a beach, there is something very inspiring about watching the water and observing a sunset or sunrise.

I make it a point to get outside as often as I can, and use the summer months to slow down and do some of the things that make me whole. It's so important to break your routine and discover new things. It keeps things exciting, fresh and gives you something to look forward to.

So, happy beginning of summer to all. I wish you those special moments that reminds us of all that life has to offer.
