🚚✨ National Truck Driver Appreciation Week ✨🚚 September 14 - 20

This week, we’re honoring the men and women who keep America moving — our truck drivers. Without their hard work and sacrifice, our economy and way of life wouldn’t be possible.

In memory of my stepfather Bernie, a USPS subcontractor and legend behind the wheel who passed in 2019, we’re proud to give back in his honor. 💙 Let's send the trucker some more business 😊

👉 Enjoy FREE shipping on ALL orders this week only! Use coupon code: NTDAW
(Normally only available on $100+ orders)

It’s our way of saying thank you to the drivers who spend their lives on the road, making daily sacrifices so the rest of us can thrive.

Today's Herbal Quiz!

This unique medicinal plant has a great deal of history and lore, especially in the American South. Though it is considered a toxic plant, it is a powerful remedy for stagnant lymphatic and endocrine function, the root is used topically or internally as a low dose or homeopathic. Despite its toxic nature, many Southerners describe eating the young leaves as a salad. The berries make a beautiful purple dye but don't eat them! The dried root is the part that is typically used.

It is classified as having a cold, bitter energy and its properties are alterative, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, emetic and cathartic. Do you know it?

Trillium has always captivated me, not only because of its beauty but also the medicinal lore surrounding it. Trillium erectum, aka Beth Root or "Birth root" is one of our native spring ephemerals here in Vermont and throughout New England.

I have never worked with it, but I do know the basics about it, that it was used by the indigenous peoples as a uterine stimulant to help facilitate childbirth. I could go on listing research but I do not encourage the use of this plant as medicine.

Tonight on my walk, I saw a couple of Trillium pods that were barely hanging on, these super overripe fruit pods were about to drop and they easily did, right into my hand! Quite excited, I brought them home to dissect them. I never knew how many seeds were inside one of these pods 😲 This first pic is one I took years ago, but it goes well since I found 2 pods this evening.

So I did what anyone would do, I went out to my bed of Solomon's Seal (the shadiest spot at our house) and planted all the seeds amongst my Solomon's Seal. With any luck they will germinate next spring and in a few years we'll have blooms to admire 😍

Can you name this herb? I've got a bunch growing in my garden this year that reseeded itself from one plant last year. The seeds are the medicinal part that are commonly used. It is carminative, a warming circulatory stimulant, and a powerful herb for the immune system. I will give you one more hint, it is commonly referred to as "the cure for every disease except death".

Yesterday I spent the morning at Wading Bear Farm helping my friend Isaiah harvest an incredible stand of Plantago major—common plantain.

This particular plantain was massive and super healthy! Growing in rich, black soil that squished beneath our boots, the patch was teeming with life—earthworms everywhere, grasshoppers, slugs, a true sign of a thriving ecology. I am reminded again that the medicine is only as good as the soil it grows in.

Plantain is a classic skin ally, rich in mucilage and tannins—making it both soothing and astringent. Traditionally used for everything from bug bites to burns, and internally for gut inflammation, ulcers, and even chronic skin conditions. A cooling, drawing plant—great for poultices and better yet, preserved in tincture form. Plantain also supports healthy lymph flow and has mild antimicrobial effects — great if you’re dealing with stagnation or swelling.

After the harvest, we brought the plantain back and gave it a thorough wash in cold water, removing every trace of dirt and composting any damaged leaves. Then we rough-chopped the leaves with scissors before transferring them into the food processor and grinding them into a vibrant green pulp.

The fresh herb went directly into gallon jars, where we add 95% organic cane alcohol. It will now macerate for at least a month before being pressed and bottled. We also dried some for use in tea or salves. I thought about running some through a juicer and freezing the juice!

Many thanks to Isaiah and Chrissy of Wading Bear for stewarding such a beautiful patch of land. I look forward to our future collaboration!
