Myopia at first glance is a refractive error—a vision problem that occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back or the cornea is too curved. This causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. As such, while close objects can be seen clearly, distant objects appear blurry.

But more than just simply an inconvenience corrected with glasses or contacts, higher levels of myopia may significantly increase the risk for serious eye conditions later in life, including conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic maculopathy (a type of degenerative eye disease).

I have seen an increase in myopia during my career. In fact, it is estimated that 50% of the population will be nearsighted in the next 25 years! Fortunately, myopia progression isn’t inevitable. By taking a proactive approach, we can help slow down the rate at which myopia worsens, especially in children, teenagers, and young adults, when their eyes are still developing.
