As the weather changes, we talk about transitioning into healthy habits. Allowing ourselves to create new routines, to open our minds up to new ideas to better our overall health. ⁠

To be healthy is a matter of many objectives: nutritional health, emotional health, and structural/physical health. Connecting our habits with those objectives is the first step to making the transition into a healthy lifestyle. It may be our biology. The cooler weather often triggers biological changes that stimulate hunger and increase cravings for more energy-dense food. ❄️Try swapping out that processed food for a whole food. Focus on establishing or continuing a balanced diet including all the macro nutrients: proteins, fats and carbs.

For immune system boosts we always encourage an increase in herbal teas. Herbal teas are often full of nutrients, antioxidants, roots, and spices that can help build you up this cold season. 🌿

Diet isn't the only thing that changes..

Our time inside has increased since Covid started, is any one with us?! ⛰️Carving out time to get outside is a priority and some nights, it's easier than others especially once the temperatures drop. But make that time, it's necessary and worth it!

Limited sunlight has an effect on mood, but so does screen time. ☀️ Researched published by Discovery mood and anxiety program suggests there may be an increased risk delay in communication skills in young children who spend excess time on screens. Research also suggests that increased screen time may be related to a decrease in both sleep quality and sleep duration. Try to limit electronic device use during your day and turn off devices at least 15-30 minutes prior to going bed to improve sleep.

As always, we promote moving your body. Reemphasizing these habits around every season change will help keep your family on track to living life to the fullest.

For those high performing parents that crush it at the gym every week: you need more sleep!

A few stats:

⭐ After sleep loss you are 11% closer to reaching exhaustion in the next days workout.
After 4 days of poor sleep - Max bench drops by 20lbs.
If you happen to pull an all nighter- your perceived exertion (how hard you feel are working) increases 17-19 percent. 😵
Tennis players experience a 42% increase in hitting accuracy WITH proper sleep.

That’s not all folks-

⭐ Your immune system becomes hyperactive (T-cell, neutrophils, natural killer cells, monocytes, pro-inflammatory compounds, leukocyte levels increase).

⭐ You develop insulin sensitivity and gain weight due to poor blood sugar regulation.

⭐ Your sympathetic nervous system goes into a frenzy and releases all of its fight, flight, and freeze hormones AT NIGHT! (Cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine).

So you can kiss your growth hormone, testosterone, and muscle protein synthesis good bye. Toss in indigestion and a rapid heart rate and your recovery period has now turned into a case of anxiety or depression. 👎🏼

Move. Move often. Just move.

Our bodies are meant and built for movement.

Ancestrally we would work the fields, walk to the market, carry our purchases back home, fix or improve our homes ourselves. Some of us still do this, but in a society where everything we need/want is a “click” away, and where we can work from a computer for 8 plus hours a day - movement is a necessity that needs to be planned and intentionally brought back into our lives.

Strategies for engaging your behind: chair squats hourly - or walk to the bathroom grab some water and do 7-12 squats over the toilet.
