This is a great opportunity to clear out your medicine cabinets and dispose of unused medications in a safe way.

Extra medication can accumulate if you’ve had medication changes or didn’t use all of medication due to an allergy or procedure. Having these extras in the house or car can lead to accidental mix-ups or misuse by an unintended recipient.

If you have any questions or concerns about medications you find, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before disposing of it. They should have your most recent medications and dosages on file.

Moses Lake Police Department is taking back unwanted prescription drugs October 24 at Walmart

MOSES LAKE, WA On Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Moses Lake Police Department (MLPD) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will provide the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to Walmart at 1005 N Stratford RD (Sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This October’s event is DEA’s 19th nationwide event since its inception 10 years ago.

Last fall, Americans turned in nearly 883,000 pounds of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has now collected nearly 6,350 tons of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative in 2010.

To keep everyone safe, collection sites will follow local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

In addition to DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, there are many other ways to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs every day, including the 11,000 authorized collectors that are available all year long. For more information, visit DEA’s year-round collection site locator.

The FDA also provides information on how to properly dispose of prescription drugs. More information is available here: https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/where-and-how-dispose-unused-medicines.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 24 Take Back Day event, go to www.DEATakeBack.com or call MLPD (509) 764-3887.

A timely article about DO medicine in light of recent criticism of our profession. I am honored to have been taught by Dr. Don Woods (the grandfather of this article’s author). He was an amazing, kind, caring physician who served his community for over 50 years, everything I strive to be as a family medicine doctor.

Osteopathy was founded by a 19th-century healer who believed the body was a self-healing machine.

Who’s planning to play? What a great way to get out and see some of our parks!

Welcome to the Park Bingo Scavenger Hunt where you and your family will be able to embark on a free adventure across 25 parks in Moses Lake over the next 5 weeks. Each week we will release 5 new parks where a painted rock has been hidden. What is special about these rocks? Well, that is for you to discover and write down the theme on each of the squares listed with the park. The rocks may or may not have a specific word on them, but rather a theme significant to Moses Lake Parks & Recreation. For example, if you saw someone swimming, you could write down “Surf ‘n Slide Water Park,” “swimming,” “swim lessons,” and you would get credit for finding that rock. We will tell you the name of each park as they show up on your Bingo sheet, and all you need to do is go there and starting hunting.

For every Bingo you make, you will receive one entry into the drawing for some cool prizes donated by local businesses and organizations in our community. Prize winners will be announced the following Friday morning each week, so you have from Friday to Thursday to get entered to win a prize(s) for that set of rocks.

How to play:
1. We will announce every Friday once the rocks have been placed on our Parks & Recreation page.
2. Download our BINGO sheet from our website (link will be provided on Fridays) or you can pick up just inside the front doors of our main lobby (brochure rack).
3. Once you have a BINGO, turn your sheet into the black drop box in front of our building (police station side of main entrance).
4. Pick up and new BINGO sheet and DO NOT FORGET to write your previous rock finds to the new Bingo sheet each week so you can continue to make more BINGO’s and eventually that Blackout!

Special notes:
• We are leaving the rocks out there. So, if you are just finding out about this scavenger hunt in week 3, you can still go out and find all the rocks.
• If you get a “Blackout” in week 5, you will receive an additional 5 entries towards a very special prize. If you are taking the kids out with you, make sure you grab extra Bingo sheet(s) for them for more entry opportunities.
• You can win each week. The more you play, the greater your chances are of winning prizes.

PLEASE DO NOT PICK UP THE ROCKS. They are a work of art and we would like them to continue to be a part of our community.
