Did You Know Fruit Juices Can Interfere With Your Medications? 🍊🍏🍇

Grapefruit juice is the most well-known offender — but apple juice and orange juice can also alter how your body absorbs more than 50% of common prescription medications.

These juices can block important enzymes and transporters in your gut, which means your medicine may not get absorbed properly.
👉 Sometimes this makes the medication too strong,
👉 Other times it makes it not work well at all.

Here are some common medications affected:

🚫 Grapefruit Juice

Can increase levels of:

Certain statins (Lipitor/atorvastatin, Zocor/simvastatin)
Calcium channel blockers (felodipine, nifedipine)
Some anxiety meds (buspirone)
Some allergy meds (fexofenadine)
Amiodarone
Methadone
Certain immunosuppressants (tacrolimus, cyclosporine)

🚫 Apple & Orange Juice

Can decrease absorption of:

Fexofenadine (Allegra)
Certain antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin)
Beta-blockers (atenolol)
Diabetes meds like sitagliptin
Thyroid medications (levothyroxine can be affected by citrus)

Nutrient Depletion & Medications: What You Should Know

Many medications can lower important vitamins and minerals in the body — and one of the most common examples is proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, and others.

PPIs are very effective for acid reflux and GERD, but long-term use may decrease levels of:
👉 Magnesium
👉 Vitamin B12
👉 (and in some cases) other essential minerals

Why does this matter?
Low magnesium or B12 can lead to everyday symptoms that many people don’t immediately connect to their medications:

Low Magnesium may cause:
Muscle cramps or spasms
Weakness
Fatigue
Irregular heartbeat in severe cases

Low Vitamin B12 may cause:
Numbness or tingling in hands/feet
Memory problems
Fatigue
Mood changes
Anemia

If you take a PPI daily, especially for several months or longer, it may be worth reviewing your medications with a pharmacist.
