Breastfeeding helps reduce the risk of SIDS, asthma, diabetes, and obesity — conditions that Black infants face at disproportionately higher rates. For moms, it lowers the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and breast cancer.

Despite these benefits, barriers like limited access, healthcare bias, and lack of support contribute to lower breastfeeding rates within the Black community.

Black Breastfeeding Week is dedicated to changing this narrative through education, celebration, and community-driven care.

Dr. Smith, our Family Medicine Program Director, recently demonstrated how we use blue light therapy to treat common dermatologic conditions in our clinic.

Our residents are gaining hands-on experience with this tool as part of their procedural training—preparing them to manage a wide range of skin concerns right here in the primary care setting.

"Every child deserves a story!" - Dr. Macy Rowan

This summer, PGY-2 resident Dr. Macy Rowan launched a successful book drive to support our newest initiative: providing free books—in English and Spanish—to all of our pediatric patients at their visits! 📚💓

After witnessing the backward step in reading skills many kids experience during the break from school, Dr. Rowan recognized that as a part of the healthcare team, residents are in a unique position to do more than just recommend kids read over the summer—that they can help provide the books themselves. We're proud of this new chapter in our patient care that is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: that healthy minds grow just like healthy bodies🧠🌱👧👦

Using our state-of-the-art birthing manikins, they’re learning how to manage a variety of labor and delivery scenarios — from routine births to complex cases — all while practicing compassionate care for expectant mothers.

We’re proud to be shaping the next generation of family physicians with the tools, training, and heart to make a difference from day one.

We recently had the honor of celebrating these outstanding residents at their graduation ceremony last weekend—a truly bittersweet moment for all of us at Georgia South Family Medicine. While we’re sad to see them go, our hearts are full knowing they’re stepping into the next chapter of their medical journeys with unmatched skill and integrity!

We’ve watched Dr. Monica Drummond, Dr. Charles Haddad, and Dr. Bayan Suleiman grow into not only exceptional physicians but also compassionate caregivers who truly lead with heart. Meet PGY-1 resident Macy Rowan, D.O.!

Dr. Rowan is proud South Georgia native whose passion for healthcare began in her hometown of Valdosta. With a mother who’s a registered nurse and a father who’s a pharmacist, she was inspired early on by the compassion and impact she witnessed in her own family. Driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in rural communities, she set her sights on a career in medicine — and never looked back.

After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia, Dr. Rowan earned her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – South Georgia Campus in Moultrie. Drawn to the area’s strong sense of community and personal ties to her late grandfather, Buie Rowan, she knew this was where she wanted to begin her career.

With a passion for full-spectrum care, she’s especially drawn to family medicine’s focus on chronic disease management, preventative care, and long-term patient relationships. Her goal is to continue serving the South Georgia community in an outpatient setting — addressing the critical need for primary care in rural areas. “Serving rural South Georgia has always been my dream,” she says — and now, she’s doing just that.
