May is ! This annual event provides an opportunity to raise awareness about hearing and speech problems, and to encourage people to think about their own hearing and get it checked out. Here are some stats:
-Approximately 2% of children with a language disorder also have an existing medical condition (e.g., autism, intellectual disability)
-Research suggests that the first 6 months of life are the most crucial to a child’s development of language skills
-Nearly 1 in 12 (7.7%) U.S. children ages 3-17 has had a disorder related to voice, speech, language, or swallowing in the past 12 months
-Boys ages 3-17 are more likely than girls to have a voice, speech, language, or swallowing disorder (9.6% compared to 5.7%)
