Yes! Read that again: Mitochondria can remember a stressor for more than 50 generations.

Sounds crazy but this is exactly what researchers found out in a roundworm study - the transgenerational passing of neuronal mitochondrial stress through elevated mitochondrial DNA levels.

But it’s not all doom and gloom - the descendants of stressed worms had increased resilience to stress and lived longer albeit with slower development and fewer offspring. And in humans, it’s important that we distinguish between healthy, good stress (ie, the experience of exercise or accomplishing something challenging) versus chronic, toxic stress.

And although this study was done with worms, there’s other research showing that stress can alter our genes and epigenetic expression, and we can pass these patterns down to our offspring. Highly compelling to me is the fact that 25% of the methylation sites that are evaluated in the DNAmAge clock we used in our bio age-reversal study are on gene regions that get turned on in response to stress!

Luckily, there’s a lot we can do to reverse stress-induced damage (and likely, by sticking with good habits, the negative epigenetic programming it creates), from cuddling, playing with our pets, and listening to music to yoga, meditation, and breathwork. Even just limited amounts of some of these practices can lead to favorable epigenetic changes.
