I concluded my month-long experiment with Smart Start Ignition Interlock, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the process. I voluntarily installed the device so that I could better understand what clients go through once an interlock becomes part of their lives. I also wanted to be in a stronger position when discussing the interlock as an option with prosecutors and courts. Mission accomplished on all fronts.

First, the Smart Start company is professional and forward-thinking. Their technology is sound and doesn’t allow for “cheating.” Quite simply, you need to blow below the .025 alcohol level to start the vehicle and provide random samples during your operation to avoid a violation. With the inclusion of a small camera, compliance is assured. The system is regularly calibrated and reports sent to Smart Start and the overseeing court.

Second, using the device is only a slight inconvenience that is certainly better than having a restricted license or no license at all. The installers — Street Beats in Savannah — installed the interlock in less than an hour and thoroughly explained its proper operation.

Third, I think that this technology is going to continue to be used on an increasing basis around the country. My state of Georgia has incorporated interlock installation into its administrative license suspension process at an even earlier stage than the past. I know personally that courts and prosecutors are seeing this technology as a better tool to ensure safe driving.

A DUI can cause devastating consequences, not only to the offending driver but also to other drivers and their families. Proper installation of an interlock device can more effectively target recidivist drivers while allowing others to remain productive — all while safeguarding the roadways.

I’d like to thank Smart Start Ignition Interlock, Street Beats, and Jessica Rocker for giving me this opportunity.
