What are Probiotics? More Than Just "Good" Bacteria

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms, often strains of lactic acid bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, as well as yeasts like Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii. These microscopic helpers contribute significantly to a healthy gut, going beyond simple digestion.

Key Benefits of Probiotics:
• Supports a Healthy Intestinal Environment: Probiotics encourage a balanced gut flora, which is crucial for optimal intestinal health. They can compete with other bacteria to support the natural balance of the gut. Bifidobacteria, for instance, are naturally found in the colon, acidify their environment, and can utilize various carbohydrates for energy without producing gas.
• Enhances Digestion and Nutrient Absorption: Probiotic bacteria support digestion and can enhance the absorption of vital nutrients. They help improve nutrient digestion and absorption from your food.
• Promotes Healthy Bowel Function and Regularity: Probiotics aid in maintaining normal bowel regularity and consistency. Products like Zymex® Capsules (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/zymex-capsules) and Wafers specifically support a healthy pH range in the intestinal tract.
• Boosts Immune System Function: A significant portion of your immune system resides in your digestive tract (over 70 percent). Probiotics support the body's natural immune system function. Specific strains, like Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei (L. casei 431®), are suggested to support the gut during challenges and help maintain the body’s natural immune system response function.
• Supports Mineral Absorption: Probiotics can help support the body's natural absorption of important minerals like calcium and magnesium.
• Aids in Detoxification: By supporting overall intestinal health, probiotics indirectly contribute to the body's normal toxin-elimination function.

How Standard Process Supports Your Gut Health

Standard Process, a family-owned business for three generations, emphasizes whole food nutrient solutions, ensuring products are as close to nature as possible. They control the process from beginning to end, starting with raw materials from their certified organic farm.
• ProSynbiotic (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/prosynbiotic) : This product is a synergistic blend featuring four research-supported probiotic strains (Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5®, Lactobacillus paracasei L. casei 431®, and Bifidobacterium BB-12®) along with two prebiotic fibers (inulin and galactooligosaccharides). Prebiotics act as food for the probiotic bacteria, helping them thrive.
• Lact-Enz (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/lact-enz) ®: This formula combines digestive enzymes with probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum) to provide comprehensive support for healthy digestion and immune system function.
• Prebiotic Inulin (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/prebiotic-inulin) : As an excellent source of fiber, Prebiotic Inulin directly encourages a healthy intestinal environment that benefits probiotic flora. It also supports calcium and magnesium absorption and promotes a healthy pH in the lower GI tract.
• Zymex® Capsules (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/zymex-capsules) and Wafers (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/zymex-wafers) : These products are designed to promote a healthy pH range in the intestinal tract, encouraging a healthy intestinal environment for proper gastrointestinal flora. For those who prefer not to swallow pills, Zymex® Wafers offer a chewable option.
• Epimune Complex (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/epimune-complex) : Contains EpiCor®, a dried yeast fermentate, which in laboratory studies, has been shown to have a prebiotic effect, stimulating the growth of lactobacilli, beneficial gut bacteria.

From outside the Standard Process sources, products like BioDoph-7 Plus are also sources of healthy gut bacteria, useful for various conditions including acne. Additionally, ADP (standardized oregano extract) is noted for its utility in addressing fungal/yeast problems in the bowel, which can disrupt the gut's natural balance.

Also new from Biotics Research is: BioDoph-Fem™ is a once-daily dual-action probiotic formula targeting both women’s vaginal and gastrointestinal (GI) health.* This formula features highly researched probiotic strains that specifically support microbial balance in the vaginal and GI tracts.* It also promotes a normal vaginal pH, a healthy immune response, and a healthy gut-brain axis.* BioDoph-Fem™ features ASTARTE™, a proprietary blend of four unique strains typically found in a healthy vaginal microbiome to help support a balanced vaginal microbial population, along with CLEPIUS™, a patented strain of L.plantarum that provides natural relief from loose stools and digestive distress.*

Just as a gardener nurtures the soil to cultivate a vibrant garden, providing the right probiotics and prebiotics helps cultivate a flourishing internal environment, allowing your body to absorb nutrients, bolster defenses, and maintain harmony from within.

Make an appointment to get tested to see which of these is optimal for your gut biome at the moment.

Myth #1: “Just go out in the sun.”

If only it were that simple. Between sunscreen, skin tone, location, lifestyle, and good ol’ cloudy days, most of us just can’t make enough Vitamin D from the sun alone — especially after months of lower exposure.

Myth #2: “Only some people need Vitamin D supplements.”

Wrong again. More than 50% of the global population is deficient — and that number climbs higher for menopausal women.

Myth #3: “Your multivitamin has you covered.”

Nope. The dose is usually way too low, and most multis use cheap, hard-to-absorb forms of D. You’d need to eat pounds of fortified cereal or fish daily to come close — and who’s doing that?

Incorporating healthy fats into your diet is crucial for overall well-being. Olive oil, a staple in many Mediterranean diets, is often touted for its health benefits. Let's explore some of the pros and cons:

Pros:

Rich in Monounsaturated Fats: Olive oil is primarily composed of monounsaturated fats, which are considered "good" fats. These fats can help lower LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) and raise HDL cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol), contributing to heart health.

Antioxidant Powerhouse: Extra virgin olive oil, in particular, is rich in antioxidants, including polyphenols. These compounds can help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

Anti-inflammatory Properties: The oleic acid in olive oil, along with its polyphenols, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may be beneficial for conditions like arthritis.

Versatile in Cooking: Olive oil can be used in various cooking methods, from salad dressings to sautéing and baking (though extra virgin olive oil is best used at lower temperatures to preserve its nutrients and flavor).

Cons:

Calorie Dense: Like all fats, olive oil is high in calories. Consuming excessive amounts can contribute to weight gain if not balanced with physical activity.

Smoke Point: Olive oil has a relatively low smoke point compared to some other oils. When heated beyond its smoke point, it can break down and lose its beneficial properties, potentially even forming harmful compounds. Therefore, it's important to use appropriate cooking methods and temperatures.

Quality Variations: The quality of olive oil can vary significantly. Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed and retains the most nutrients and flavor. Be sure to look for reputable brands and check the labeling.

Potential for Oxidation: Olive oil can oxidize when exposed to air, light, and heat, which can degrade its quality and nutritional value. Store it in a cool, dark place in an airtight container.
Recommendations:

When incorporating olive oil into your diet, I recommend opting for extra virgin olive oil whenever possible to maximize its health benefits. Use it in moderation due to its calorie content and be mindful of cooking temperatures to avoid exceeding its smoke point.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in over 600 enzymatic reactions in the body, including DNA repair. While often overlooked, magnesium deficiency can have far-reaching consequences for your health. Let's talk about the importance of magnesium for DNA integrity and its broader implications for overall well-being.

Magnesium and DNA Damage

Research suggests that low magnesium levels may compromise the body's ability to repair DNA damage, potentially leading to genetic instability. A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition investigated the relationship between magnesium, homocysteine, and DNA damage in 172 healthy individuals.

The researchers found that:

* Magnesium levels were positively correlated with folate and vitamin B12, and inversely correlated with homocysteine.
* Homocysteine levels were positively correlated with DNA damage.
* Participants with high magnesium and low homocysteine exhibited the lowest levels of DNA damage.

These findings highlight the importance of maintaining adequate magnesium levels for DNA health and underscore the potential risks associated with magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium's Broader Health Implications

Beyond its role in DNA repair, magnesium is crucial for numerous bodily functions, including:

* Muscle and nerve function
* Blood sugar control
* Blood pressure regulation
* Bone health

Low magnesium levels have been linked to several chronic diseases, including:

* Diabetes
* Cardiovascular disease
* Osteoporosis

This underscores the significance of magnesium in maintaining overall health and well-being.

Ensuring Adequate Magnesium Intake

Consume magnesium-rich foods including: Leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains.

By prioritizing magnesium intake, you can support your DNA health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and promote overall well-being.

05/13/2025

I want to shine a light on a crucial nutrient that plays a pivotal role in your health: Vitamin D. Often called the "sunshine vitamin," its benefits extend far beyond just bone health. Emerging research continues to uncover its widespread impact on our bodies.

Why is Vitamin D So Important?

Sufficient Vitamin D levels are essential for numerous bodily functions. Research has highlighted its significant contributions, including:

- Reducing the risk of autoimmune diseases: Vitamin D plays a role in modulating the immune system.

- Protective role against certain cancers: Studies suggest a link between adequate Vitamin D and a lower risk of cancers, particularly breast and colorectal.

- May reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes: Vitamin D appears to influence insulin sensitivity and secretion.

- Protects against inflammatory bowel diseases: It contributes to gut health and immune regulation within the digestive system.

- Potential benefits for neurodegenerative diseases: Research indicates it may play a beneficial role in conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

- Crucial for pregnancy and beyond: Adequate Vitamin D is vital for reducing pregnancy complications.

- Supports bone integrity: Essential for calcium absorption, helping to prevent bone fractures.

- Contributes to overall longevity: Studies show a correlation between sufficient Vitamin D levels and reduced total mortality.

Without enough Vitamin D, your risk for these conditions, as well as pregnancy complications, bone fractures, and overall mortality, can unfortunately increase.

Boosting Your Vitamin D Through Diet

While sunshine is a primary source, especially during the sunnier months here in Michigan, we can also obtain Vitamin D through our diet. Here are some excellent food sources:

- Fatty Fish: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna are packed with Vitamin D.

- Egg Yolks: Don't discard the yolk! It's a good source of this vital nutrient.

- Mushrooms: Certain mushrooms, especially those exposed to UV light during growth, can provide Vitamin D.

- Cod Liver Oil: A traditional supplement renowned for its high Vitamin D content.

Supplementing Wisely with Standard Process

Even with a healthy diet and some sun exposure, it can sometimes be challenging to maintain optimal Vitamin D levels, particularly during the fall and winter months or for individuals with specific health needs. This is where high-quality supplementation can be beneficial.

As you know, I prefer to recommend whole food-based supplements. For Vitamin D, Standard Process Cataplex® D (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/cataplex-d) is an excellent option.

Supports Overall Health: Cataplex D supports bone health, mineral absorption (especially calcium), and a robust immune system.

Promotes Healthy Bone Density: It encourages healthy calcium absorption from your intestinal tract into the bloodstream, which is crucial for maintaining strong bones.

Provides Vitamin D3: It contains cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), the form of Vitamin D that your body naturally produces from sunlight and is readily utilized.

Whole Food Philosophy: Standard Process is committed to providing nutrients as they are found in nature, which can enhance their absorption and effectiveness.

Your health is your most valuable asset. Ensuring you have adequate Vitamin D is a simple yet powerful step towards a healthier, more vibrant life.

If you have any questions about Vitamin D or would like to discuss your nutritional needs, please don't hesitate to schedule an appointment.

Yours in Health,

Dr. Stacy

In the Research

If you’re eating clean, hitting your workouts, and still not seeing results, your sleep habits might be the missing piece. Research shows that skimping on sleep can slow your metabolism, increase cravings, and mess with fat loss.

Depleted zinc has direct relevance for anxiety because when zinc is low anxiety is increased. This happens for a number of reasons:

Zinc is needed to make your neurotransmitters (calming GABA and happy/calming serotonin)

Low zinc means high copper (and more anxiety)

Zinc is one of the key nutrients for easing symptoms of the social anxiety condition called pyroluria

Zinc is needed for hormone support - for the adrenals and for the s*x hormones like calming progesterone (which helps with sleep and anxiety)

Zinc plays a role in appetite and sugar cravings

Zinc helps modulate inflammation (a factor in anxiety, heart disease and all chronic health conditions)

In the winter we have dry, cold, or the fun combination of the two — and you’ve likely reached the point of the year where your skin has seen better days.

Sodium plays a crucial role in regulating fluid balance, which directly affects skin hydration. It's often overlooked, but maintaining proper electrolyte balance is essential for overall skin health.

Be Mindful of Dehydrating Situations

Environmental Factors:
Dry, cold air: As mentioned, winter weather can significantly reduce skin moisture.
Indoor heating: Central heating systems often strip moisture from the air, exacerbating dry skin.

Lifestyle Factors:
Excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption: These substances can act as diuretics, increasing fluid loss.
Intense physical activity: Sweating during exercise depletes both water and electrolytes.
Certain medications: Some medications can have diuretic effects.

Drink When Thirsty and Beyond

Thirst Mechanism: While thirst is a good indicator, it's not always reliable, especially in cold weather or with age.
Consistent Hydration: Aim for consistent water intake throughout the day, even when not feeling thirsty.
Hydrating Foods: Incorporate water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and celery into your diet.

Get Enough Electrolytes

Sodium's Role: Sodium is essential for maintaining fluid balance in the extracellular fluid, which surrounds skin cells.
Electrolyte Balance: Other electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, and chloride also play vital roles in hydration and skin health.
Standard Process Recommendation:
For electrolyte support, Standard Process offers Cal-Amo (https://askdrstacy.standardprocess.com/products/cal-amo) which can help support electrolyte balance and overall hydration.
Adding small amounts of unprocessed sea salt to food can also be helpful.
LMNT for a tasty solution:
Provides a significant dose of sodium, potassium, and magnesium. This replenishment helps prevent dehydration, muscle cramps, fatigue, and headaches associated with electrolyte imbalances. (we have trial packs in the office!)

03/13/2025

Over the years, I’ve seen countless patients who felt stuck, struggling with symptoms that conventional healthcare couldn’t explain—fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, hair loss—you name it.

Extended hormone testing uncovered the root causes of irregular periods, weight gain, and low libido. Extended autoimmune testing helped patients connect the dots between gut issues, food sensitivities, and undiagnosed autoimmune conditions. For those with a family history of Alzheimer’s, early detection testing provided clarity and the chance to make proactive lifestyle changes. These patients gained more than just data—they gained the clarity, control, and life-changing insights to support better health.

That’s the power of cutting-edge science in your hands.

Is lab testing the missing piece?

Understanding your health means looking deep beneath the surface—especially when family history, personal health history, or environmental exposures are in play. This level of personalized testing matters because no two people are the same.

With today’s technology, there’s no reason to settle for blind spots in your health.

You can reply to this email to discuss testing that might be right for you. The lab is Quest which is right around the corner from almost everyone!
