I've really slacked on going to yoga class since November for numerous reasons, good and bad. I’ve always had difficulty meditating, and these days I just fall asleep. However, I've never stopped practicing yoga of the mind. I admit. My favorite part of teacher-training was the book learning and community sharing. Getting to lead my Wednesday morning yoga class help fill that gap.
This week, I pulled a concept from the first book we had to read for teacher training, “How Yoga Works.”
We see an object, let’s say what we call a pencil, as an instrument to write with. But a dog doesn't see it as a pencil or an instrument to write with. At best, they see it as chew stick if anything at all. They may ignore it completely.
What is a pencil to you? Something that comes with an eraser? A dull instrument you always have to sharpen? Something you too can chew?
We all see the world differently and assign meanings big and small to objects, actions and events. Realizing this allows us to separate our emotions from it and see things as they are—nothing until we assign meaning to it.
The concept is big and like all the yoga sutras, a lot to wrap your head around. This book makes it a little easier.
Its a good read! By the way, this concept in the book is a cow and a pen and not a dog and a pencil. That part’s my own!
And now I just need to get my butt to yoga class!
