Our Story
Naturopaths are people trained in forms of healing that work WITH the body’s inherent energy and capacity to restore and repair. The naturopathic approach to health requires that we look for the root cause of a health issue rather than simply looking at or masking symptoms. Naturopathic medicine is a classical system of assessment with roots that reach back to humankind’s earliest existence. The roots of naturopathy hearken back to a time when healers came from a community or culture. These healers understood the healing power in the human body and the plants and land that surrounded them. They also understood the inter-connection of mind, body, and spirit in regards to health and actively wove between all these facets of life and energy to bring about healing. Naturopaths follow 6 basic principles: First, do no harm! – “Doing no harm” means to champion therapies that nourish and strengthen the body. Non-invasive means of diagnosis and analysis are generally preferred and championed. The Healing power of nature – Many healing tools come directly from the earth. Hydrotherapy (water therapy), botanical preparations, essential oils, and homeopathy are just a few that come directly from nature. Identify and treat the cause – Illness does not occur without cause. The body always whispers before it shouts. Naturopath as Teacher – Naturopaths believe our primary role is to provide information and empower people to take charge of their own health. Treat the whole person – We are complex, multifaceted beings. We are more than just a body and some thoughts. The interaction of mind, body, and spirit must be engaged to achieve full health and wellness. Prevention is key! – True preventative medicine requires making daily investments in our health. Some examples are eating foods that nourish us, exercising, developing loving relationships and supportive communities, taking care of our lands, and interacting with spirit. Healthy people live in healthy environments. The Urban Naturopath is found in both the urban and rural setting, and freely moves between worlds. We gather the best of both realms and hopefully inspire all to move to a higher place. The Urban Naturopath can navigate easily on a farm with the traditional farmer, help build an urban garden on a rooftop in the big city, or walk a neighbor through the grocery store to pick out what will be best for them. Naturopathic training is rigorous – 4-6 years of academic work – intertwined with a mix of hands-on application work, research, presentation, and study. Examples of the modalities Naturopaths use are: Herbalism, Aromatherapy and Essential oil work, Cranio-sacral therapy, Nutritional counseling, Homeopathy, Energy work, Hydrotherapy, Music/Color/Art therapy, And so many more! In addition, my status as a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner or FDN-P allows me to use carefully chosen functional labwork to expertly hone in on root causes of poor health and imbalance. The mixture of old and new offers the best of both worlds for maximum client satisfaction!
A hallmark of naturopathic work is teaching classes and doing community outreach. This is a great place to start if you’re new to Natural Health or just want to “stick your toe in the water”!
