As we move into late summer, I’m thinking about transitions.

In Chinese medicine, late summer is connected to the Earth element. It is a time to harvest the bounty of our hard work this year, and marks the transition of the abundant yang energy of summer to the quieter and softer yin energy of fall.

Swipe to learn more about supporting Earth energy to ease your transition into fall.

Food Stagnation. This has got to be one of my favorite Chinese medicine terms because it is so perfectly descriptive of the feeling that you get after eating Thanksgiving dinner.

My herbalist magic trick for family feasts? Being able to quickly and naturally resolve indigestion and food stagnation. There are a number of herbal formulas that address food stagnation, and one of the key herbs for this is hawthorn berry!

Hawthorn berry belongs to a group of herbs that help to reduce food stagnation. It is particularly good at resolving symptoms brought on by eating too much meat and rich, greasy foods.

Another amazing benefit? Research shows that hawthorn can help to lower levels of “bad” cholesterol.

A cup of hawthorn berry tea can be beneficial if you’re feeling overstuffed after Thanksgiving dinner. Pregnant people and people taking blood thinners and some heart medications should not use hawthorn. Please consult a licensed herbalist before starting any herbal regimen to be sure it is right for you!

In traditional Chinese medicine, this time of year is known as “Late Summer.” It is a transitional period between summer and fall, and is associated with the Earth element.

Late summer brings the last push of growth and outward expansion before harvest season, when the energy of the planet and our bodies begins to turn inward in preparation for winter. Late summer is an ideal time to self-nurture, cultivate personal growth, and work on passion projects. Use this year’s final burst of yang energy to bring your dreams to fruition!

The Earth element is related to the energetics of the digestive system, so if your digestive system is imbalanced, you may notice an increase in digestive symptoms like nausea, heartburn, indigestion, and IBS or suffer symptoms of a gastrointestinal bug. During late summer, we are also prone to disorders of dampness, which can include joint inflammation and pain.

An acupuncture tune up can help relieve any late summer related symptoms you experience, and can help pave the way for incredible things to manifest during this special time of year.

If you notice that you suffer from migraines before your period, you aren’t alone! Fluctuating levels of estrogen are a common cause of migraines: many people experience migraines triggered by the drop in estrogen that occurs during the week leading up to your period.

Hormonal (PMS) migraines are often exacerbated by low magnesium levels. Magnesium is pulled to the uterus to support contractions during your period, which can cause temporary drops in magnesium levels in other places in your body, resulting in increased muscular tension in the head, neck, and shoulders.

Eating plenty of magnesium rich foods during the week before your period can help to reduce the severity of hormonal migraines. For some people, supplemental magnesium can make a big difference in symptoms. Please be sure to consult with a healthcare provider about the best form and dose of supplemental magnesium for you.

Acupuncture is another great tool for managing all kinds of headaches, including hormonal migraines! Research has shown that acupuncture can reduce both the severity and frequency of migraines, and that it may be as effective as prophylactic medication for migraine.

Who doesn’t love free stuff?! I’m so excited to be participating in the fundraiser this weekend at Mimi’s Coffeehouse. Come by to get your free ear seeds, and browse the pop up herb shop! I’m happy to answer any questions you have about how Chinese medicine can help you to become the best, healthiest version of yourself.

Acupressure ear seeds are a great add on to regular acupuncture treatments. These tiny acupressure pellets help to stimulate points that can influence the overall balance of your body. This weekend, you can choose one of three applications: stress and anxiety reduction (pictured), insomnia relief, or healthy weight support.

Can’t wait to see you at this Friday from 6-9pm and Saturday from 11am-2pm!

In Chinese medicine, the energetic system of the liver is easily upset by stress. When the liver system is not healthy, qi (energy) cannot flow freely through our bodies, leaving us feeling stuck, frustrated, irritated, and prone to outbursts of upset and anger.

This simple breathwork exercise first clears stuck or stagnant liver qi and then uses Qi Gong sound therapy to soothe and heal the energetic system of the liver.

Find a quiet place to sit or lie down and close your eyes. Breathe in through the nose, completely filling the belly and lungs. Release the breath quickly through the mouth with an audible sigh. Repeat 3x.

Next, inhale deeply and slowly into the belly. Release the breath slowly, making a “SHHHHH” noise, repeating as many times as you’d like. “Shu” is the Qi Gong healing sound of the liver: no wonder we instinctively use it to soothe an upset baby!

Backyard Herbalism: Part 1! I’ll be sharing some Chinese herbs that are commonly found in the Northeast. Follow along to learn about medicinal plants you might have growing in your yard or garden!

Zi Hua Di Ding, known as violet in English, is used in Chinese herbalism to clear heat and relieve toxicity. Violets are energetically cold with an acrid, bitter flavor that helps to clear heat from the heart and liver channels.

Violets are best known for their ability to address “hot swelling” conditions of the eyes, head, throat, and back. Modern studies have shown that the variety of violets used in Chinese herbalism (viola yedoensis) demonstrate anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects in a laboratory setting.

When properly dried and prepared, and then combined with other appropriate herbs by a board certified Chinese herbalist, violets can have powerful healing effects!
