Tip of the Week Tuesday!

The hormonal changes associated with pregnancy are precursors for women to develop hand conditions. Additionally, there are ergonomic risk factors during the perinatal and most notably postpartum period due to forceful exertion and repetition associated with lifting and carrying as well contact stress due to awkward or static posturing, which are required regularly throughout day-to-day activities with a newborn. Conditions that cause upper extremity pain and edema in pregnant women are often thought to resolve in the postpartum period and therefore are not often addressed by specialists; however, issues that develop during pregnancy frequently persist or new symptoms develop postpartum. Hand therapists can provide effective intervention to reduce upper extremity pain and ergonomic stressors during the entire perinatal period.
